Brake bias bar (again)
spdpug98 - 16/3/09 at 09:56 AM

Now that I have eventually been able to bleed my rears so that I have a full pedal, I am thinking about locking my bar

I will be taking my car to my mates MOT station so that he can test the brakes etc on his rollers in the hope that I can then pin the bar prior to my SVA

The question is can I just use split pins to lock the bar or do I need to use roll pins through a nut

Roll pin through a nut, with some sort of packer (copper tube). Split pins are not deemed permanent.

Thanks, thought that may be the case

I think like everything it is very much 'tester' dependent. Some will pass split pins others won't. I snapped the drill in mine while undertaking the work at the SVA and he loved it!

MOT rollers won't help --- they can't simulate weight transfer even the SVA rollers don't give truly realistic results

You need to road test at slow speed on a good clean dry surface. Start with bias centred and adjust one turn at a time until you go too far, then back off 2 full turns -- this setting should OK for SVA.

By too far do you mean that the rears lock up first?

To be honest I don't know if it was just luck but I managed to set mine on axle stands. I got wifey to sit in and push the pedal and I set it in the middle to start with. Then I just backed it off until I could just turn the rears by hand but could not shift the fronts.

SVA said it was spot on!

Presumably you need a roll pin in each end?

Whe the rears just start to lock first then you know you have gone to far, normally two full turns back towards the front will give you enough margin for SVA ---

The import thing is that the test is done on a good dry surface --- wet or slippery or dirty surfaces will cause a false setting with too much rear bias.
