Changes that will necessitate IVA?
WesBrooks - 24/2/16 at 12:40 PM

Afternoon.

Are there any other changes other than modifying the chassis which would trigger the requirement for an IVA?

As far as I'm aware you can change the engine and carry out modifications to the suspension without much issue when the car is already on the registered for road use.

I'm carrying out a re-body project which should pass without the requirement for an IVA. It is likely that the DVSA/DVLA will require an identity check on the truck before allowing the body description change on the logbook. Currently it has a 2" lift on the suspension carried out poorly by a previous owner. Without additional work including adjustable panhard rod and caster corrected front radius arms the steering self-centre doesn't work well - and IVA failure point. I'd like to correct this with the after market radius arms and rods but I'm concerned that I'd loose points on the suspension and they'd say I'd need an IVA?

I'm also considering changing my engine as the current needs a complete overhaul. Is it possible to change the log book to the new engine number (no changes to engine mounts) then go for the identity check or will the replacement engine also loose points and possibly trigger an IVA?

As said before I'm building to IVA standard but want to avoid the IVA test as it shouldn't be necessary on this project.

...ok I think this is generally a points thing? If I can't retain 8 points then I can't keep the original reg and will need an IVA?

Would changing the radius arms result in loss of suspension points or is this meaning changes like McPherson strut to double wishbone, or leaf spring to coil?

So off this list:

chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points
suspension = 2 points
axles = 2 points
transmission = 2 points
steering assembly = 2 points
engine = 1 point

I'm retaining Chassis (5), both axles (2), Transmission (2), Engine (1), Steering assembly (2 - panhard rod is suspension) so assume I have 12 points currently meaning an engine and/or transmission change with suspension mods shouldn't be a problem so long as I keep chassis, axles, and steering assembly?

I'm confused. So I won't be asked to trailer my truck to a DVSA for an identity check any more? I just register the body type change?

DVLA have lost the plot a bit with vehicle re-bodies.

Fall-out from some commercial enterprises abusing the registration of 'new built' Bugattis.

You may be OK if you already possess the original V5c but no chance if you are trying to get a registration for a chassis or pile of bits.

Hmm... I'll have a chat with the manufacturer of the body and on their forum to see what people have had to do lately.

Is it worth trying to ask the DVSA or is that more likely just to get myself pushed toward an unnecessary IVA?

Are IVAs only required after either modifying the chassis or loosing too many points to maintain the registration number? I guess an engine has to be original specification to maintain points, so mega squirt or cam would loose the engine point?

This state of flux may well accelerate my project a little before they change something else!

VIC is (was) used for checking cars who has been written off or stolen, its nothing to do with registering a radically altered vehicle.

As above you will need to base it on the points system on what's retained of the original car

Ok. So I'll ensure I've not tweaked the chassis (other than repairs) and I have a total of eight points or more and all should be fine without an IVA.

As before, as a precaution building to IVA standard any how.

This link has cleared things up, but does refer to the obsolete VIC in the context of the donor being a previous write off.
