height of VIN characters
jabbahutt - 12/9/07 at 02:51 PM

Hi

just sorting out my chassis number with local DVLA. He said height of digits was not important as long as legible. What height have you lot used for chassis stamp/plate for SVA? also stamped chassis must be visible, is it okay to stamp chassis rail or will it just dent, it's powder coated so weldin is out isn't it?

Cheers
Nigel

I was asked to put the VIN in 2 places, so I have a thick-ish bit of aluminium strip pop-riveted and PU-glued in a prominent place near to the battery. The other number is stamped directly onto the chassis behind the radiator - I sanded down the powder coating, stamped the numbers, then sprayed over with clear lacquer. The advantage of a separate piece of metal is that you can start again if you make a mistake.

My stamps are 3mm high, which is clear enough (look at a tin-top's VIN plate for guidance!).

HTH,
David

I just bought a set of digit stamps from Screwfix (they only sell one type!!!) and hammered away. I did it through the powder coat (ie no sanding involved). It did take a couple of wallops with the hammer for each digit but looks alright and at both SVAs(!) they didn't quibble.....

thus spake the manual:

quote:
1. Check the vehicle is fitted with a “manufacturer’s” plate securely attached in a conspicuous and readily accessible position that displays the
• manufacturer’s name
• vehicle identification (chassis) number
• maximum permitted laden weight for each axle
• maximum permitted laden weight of the
vehicle
• maximum permitted laden weight for the
combination (if equipped to tow a trailer).

2. Check the plate
• is of a durable material
• details are of an indelible marking
VIN characters are not less than 4mm in height.

NOTE: In the case of a vehicle that at the time of manufacture complied with the FMVSS requirements and which is fitted with a plate produced by the manufacturer the VIN characters may be less than 4mm in height.
