Staked prop shaft manipulation

Hi y'all.
Upon fitting an MX5 engine and box to a kit car with a Ford live axle the time has come to sort the prop.
We have both the old prop which is Ford 'box and the diff flange and the MX5 prop.

Having had quotes of between £150 to £200, plus Vat and post, i'm after a lower cost option.

It seems a waste to not use the perfectly good MX 5 prop but the UJs are staked.

So, is it possible to remove the UJ without destroying any irreplacable parts. Is it possible to buy the bearings/spiders, is it possible to buy bearings of different sizes?

The plan is to possible get some bushes made to account for any size differences in the bearings if needs be.

If it works then the prop'll be shortend and all proffesionally to ensure it's balanced and isn't going to fail.

Any help and input much appreciated.

Thanks.

i would just get one made by a pro.
i wouldn't go messing about with something that can break lose flailing about at a few thousand RPM next to my legs

The chasiss has got a prop catching affair thus to eat leg it needs to first make it's way through some box, thus, in the event of a breakage, which i definatly do not want, it should minimse the damage.

Despite that i still don't want it to fail. The diff flange has circlips, and new bearings will be used. It'll be modded before its trip to a prop specialists so they can double check it to make sure its safe.

And i want to save money.

Thanks for the input.

I happily spent £140 on a prop from Autoprop UK and am glad I did. I consider the propshaft to be the most dangerous part of my car, after the driver of course...

It's an investment worth making in my opinion.

Cheers,
Craig.

I had a staked prop disintegrate after bearings had been replaced by a professional prop repair company! The replaced bearing cap popped out at speed, thankfully the cross piece did not exit the joint but it thrashed around enough to break the remote gear linkage. i replaced this with a new shaft mad by one of the companies in Leeds who provided an excellent service.

As there seems to be some negativity to the idea, i'll try and put a differnt slant on the plan.

The input end of the shaft will remain unchanged.

The output end, which is staked, will have the diff flange removed, leaving the spider attached as from the factory ro the shaft.

Would it then be feasible/possible to fit/get fitted the ford, circliped diff flange on to the spider?
