Track rod ends
redeye - 16/3/12 at 10:34 AM

Hi guys

Ive done a search on this and found a few facts but non that solve my problem

I have an escort steering rack but Im not sure if its a mk1 or mk2

I am trying to replace the track rod ends and have bought these from ebay

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

unfortunately these dont seem to fit the thread on my rack.

The old track rod ends fitted fine and also fitted to the cortina uprights nicely too.

Could anyone shed any light as to what set up I may have and also suggest which track rod ends I need.

Many thanks

Patrick

You can very easily spot the difference between a mk2 and Mk2 rack by the threads.
Mk2 uses very coarse thread m14 x2
Mk1 used fine thread 0.5" UNF

Mk1 track rod end just won't go near a MK2 the dia is 1.5mm smaller.
Like wise a Mk2 track rod will start to screw on to a Mk1 trackRod but will be obviously to big.

There seems to be an error in some online parts catalogues for the Mk2 Escort and other 1970s Fords

Cortina mk3 to Mk4 Escort Mk2 (normal models not RS) Fiesta mk1 & Mk2 Granada Mk1& Mk2

QH Part Number QR1384S

AP Part Number TA684

Moprod Part Number MTR1384

Firstline Part Number FTR4040

TRW Part Number 14ES0334

Unipart Part Number GSJ119

I think they are the ones I have just bought but they dont fit the thread on my rack

Panic over....turns out it was just a dodgy bit of thread at one end of the rack.....took the old rod end off the other side and they fit fine.....fettled the thread abit and now both sides are fine.

Just another question tho.....If I turn my rack it takes just under 2 and a half turns lock to lock....so does this mean I have a 2.4 quick rack?

The steering always felt spot on for tight twisty corners but a little sketchy at high speed straight so Im guessing it is

Cheers

Patrick

Sounds as if the toe-in was not set correctly ideally you need just a small ammount of toe-in in the straight ahead position.
