I've been offered the rear end out of a 180b Datsun and as it is an independant jobbie I have been thinking of using it in my +50 Locost as a replacement for the live axel that I have already fitted by using a de dion set up and my question is this is there any reason why I can't site the de dion tube higher relative to the axel line so it is say in line with the top of the side links rather than the center as is the more usual arangement , This way I could retain all of my existing suspension links as they are now , including the panhard rod and not have to alter the rear of the chassis ( made as per the book ) . I am not to concerned about the Ratio of the diff and these units have a bomb proof reputattion so should easily be up to the job .
I have spent a bit of time looking through the archive but as far as I can see no one has deviated from a tube placement centered between the side links .

1) dedion "strut" must be horizontal at ride height
2) roll centre (if you believe...) is at height of strut in middle of car - is that where you want your roll centre???

One of the rasons that I wanted to do it the way I discribed was to maintain the panhard rod being level at ride hight as you have clearly worked out . I thend to think that there is no reason not to do as I have sugested . thanks for the input Bob

It will work - you might have to set it with a tiny bit more toe-in and negative camber than the conventional design.
