Hi,
Does anyone know where I can get one of the tools for removing the ali locking flanges at each side of a sierra diff?
thanks
Carnut
iirc its called a chisel!
once you get the locking plates off they arent that tight a good tap with a chisel will move them
Tryed that and it chipped off one of the teeth.
ditto, a good smack and they are loose!
tip the diff on its side and soak it with plus gas or simiolar. the ring is a good fit on the thread but it isnt tight against anything as it just
sets the backlash between the crownwheel and pinion. not being funny but you are knocking it the right way?
the 7" diff has around 8 thou backlash so you might have knocked it the wrong way. have a feel if the gears still move ok

Disassembled 2 diffs a couple of weeks ago, one went ok , the other was terrible.
Don't use a hammer!
I made my own tool; took a 5 mm steel strip, cut it so it fits over the center between the teeth (on its side). Took a 75cm 25mm square pipe, welded
it on the strip so it rests on top of other teeth.
Put the diff on its side as froggy said, clean it with a steelbrush and soak it with thin oil or similar. Fix the diff on the workbench.
Gently try to turn the flange out, if it stucks, turn it in again to let the oil in and try it again.
It can be difficult but this way i managed it.
I can make pictures if you need.

I wasn't turning it the wrong way, I just gave it one hit with a chissel and one lug came off. I'll try again later with some of the above methods.
I presume there both right hand tread?
any particular reason for stripping it? if its a 3.62 i have some good used c+p sets doing nothing
i remember someone saying you should try to turn a few lugs at once, as they do snap occationally. Hence you need to knock up a device to press on a few at once.
Im stripping it because ive think ive cooked the lsd. When I took the back plate off, it smelt of burnt oil. I need to get in the sides to take it
out.
I need to rebuild a spool diff for the strip and another LSD for the track/road with possibly a taller ratio.
Froggy: how much would you want for a 3.62 cw+p set?
thanks
Carnut
well according to the experts on here my 3.15 diffs are worth nothing so perhaps i should pay you to take one off me
i want the grand sum of f$$K
all so if you can work out the postage il send you one ive got another set which i need to keep so its not a prob
