My hub won't fit
Indymike - 21/12/06 at 01:36 PM

B*gger (in the best Chrismas spirit of course!),

Just spent most of my morning trying to fit my front (Sierra) hubs. One went on fine, but the other one just won't fit over the tapered end of the bottom ball joint. It goes in a little bit, just enough for the nut to go on, but with no threads showing. Can't be right, especially as the one on the other sits much lower on the ball joint and the threaded part sticks out by 3 or 4 rounds.
Maybe the hub is not reamed right? Can't really go to MK to have it checked as I live in Holland. Don't really fancy going to the Dutch MK importer, 'cause he is about 100 miles away from me. Maybe I'll atack the hub with my dremel and see if I can 'hand ream' it a little. Or is this a bad idea??

Any suggestions are welcome!

Don't use the dremel to 'hand ream' it. The taper is s precision thing, you will need a real reamer with the correct taper, else you might find it comming lose under load/vibration...

Have you tried swapping it to the other side to see if its definately the hub?

Yeah I know it will be round the wrong way......but its a test.

Edit: actually I may be being really stupid

You might be right, mightn't you?

If he tries both hubs on both bottom ball joints that would explain whether it's the hub or possibly the ball joint, wouldn't it?

What have I missed? Maybe I'm stupid?!

Adam.

Are both tapers clean and free of crud? A little bit of muck in there will make a surprising difference to what will/won't fit. Also, if painted, remove the paint, as this can stop them fitting too. Also, any mating faces should be kept clean of paint.

Don't know where in NL you are, but how far away is Speedon? They'd probably be able to help...

Indymike - 21/12/06 at 08:37 PM

Speedon is also not too close, but I might go there for their annual end-of-year drink-and-talk-about-kitcars gettogether.

I actually thought about switching the hubs, just to see if that fits, but didn't feel like taking the other one off again and finally ran out of time, so had to give up.

I'll try again tomorrow, make sure everything is clean and free of paint and if necessary switch the hubs. How easy should it be to pull the hub off the bottom ball joint (once the nut is off ofcourse!)?

So where *approximately (exactly?)* are you in Holland?

Indymike - 21/12/06 at 09:22 PM

I'm in Badhoevedorp, a small village wedged between Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport.
