Push in to Bolt On
mistergrumpy - 2/1/07 at 04:06 PM

I want to change my push in diff to a bolt on using the bolty flanges off my other diff (cos I now have two and can't use them as standard, well ones flicking mahoosive and is 3:92!). I know this is possible cos I saw it mentioned on the Sierra Owners Club site but you have to be a member to read it and it seems you have to pay to be a member and I'm too tight to pay Does anyone know how to do it or can anyone have a peep on the FSOC site cos I know some of you are members there. Just as a bit of forward planning as it looks like its gonna take AGES to gring the bolts of the back cases. They're stuck solid! I'd buy a new one if they were cheap enough (read very cheap!) but I've got two already and as mentioned, I'm too tight. I'd rather spend the money on summat else than a 3rd diff . Cheers.

I think it should be possible, if both are open diffs (lsd shafts are diffferent lengths.) If you take off the back cover and look inside you'll see the shafts are only secured with a circlip, remove the clips and they simply pull out.

You mean the flanges? The shafts come off by unbolting them from the flanges.
Has anyone a decent picture of an opened up open diff? I've seen one kicking around but it was a funny angle.

The two flange/shaft thingies are held in with circlips which you remove from the centre of the diff. I think the two flange thingies then just pull out and put the new ones in. I think that's it. But I could be wrong though!
Oh, I would go take a pic, but it's cold and windy, and I'd have to put my diff back together to do it!

Chris if all you want is a 7 inch diff that has a ratio of 3.62 and has bolt on shafts i might have a spare

or just stick with the 3.92 now and bide your time and a 3.62 will probably turn up for pennies

If you do mate I think I might just snatch your hand off. I don't think I can be arsed grinding or hitting my hand with with the hammer any more! Sounds great.

Yes the flanges (output shafts) not the drive shafts, which bolt to them with a lobro joint sandwiched between the two. Just pull the casing off and look inside, you'll see what i mean .
P.S if you heat the driveshaft torx bolts up, they come out much easier.

Can they be converted the other way i.e. take the flanges off a bolt-on type diff to accept push-in type shafts?
