Noisy Rear End

Not the result of a bad batch of garlic eclaires but my rear axle has a bearing "roar" that I would like to look at and probably cure while it's off the road for other things.

First question is where is it likely to be. It sounds to me to be at the wheels so I am thinking the bearings need replacing.

I really have not much idea of the anatomy of a capri axle so am not sure how to take it apart and what tools I may need to change the bearings. I have a sierra haynes manual but it only has details for the P100 and they are pretty sketchy.

Does anyone have any details or can advise what I need to do.

good write up - seems to be just like the escort half shafts.

way to fit the retaining collar is to heat it red hot and it will expand to slide downm, maybe a few persuasive thumps with a hammer.

re: the slide hammer - you can make a tiny press using bolts and treaded studding placed between the retaiing collar and the plate - search my posts as I have photos of this in action. (axle removal tool or something).

Are you sure its the wheel bearings and not the diff?

No not sure at all. The diff does slope down slightly which probably is a problem with oil levels and is one thing I am going to correct over the winter.

I could take the rear cover off but I've not much of a clue what I'd be looking at.
