Geared Steering Quickeners

Anyone had experience with inline steering quickeners?

2:1 ratio

at $160 it seems like an inexpensive way to alter my slow rack ratio.

2:1 seems a little abrupt - What's your ratio at the moment? If you get too low and then burp whilst driving the twitch on the wheel could put you in the next state?....

Edit to say: p.s. Lovely car...

Thank you. Right now it feels like I am steering an oil tanker... Honestly can't recall the actual ratio ottomh (off the top of my head).

Quaife do make a new rack and pinion gear set for my housing that will provide a 1.5:1 increase in ratio. 2.5 turns lock to lock. I have the same rack as the Toyota AE86.

Specs for 85 Toyota MR2 -

Steering type ......................... rack & pinion
Overall ratio ....................... 18.0:1
Turns, lock-to-lock ................. 3.1

Should I consider the 1.5:1 ratio as a more logical option than 2:1?

Any personal experiences?

Why not measure up PAS rack from a later MR2, they use an electric pump so no hard work involved with piping etc.

Steve, Personally I found a 2.4 turn rack a little too quick for me and changed it for a 2.9 which suits me better as my car is used primarily on the road. The difference is subtle but noticeable and I found bumpy lanes much easier to stay on my chosen lines.

Sounds like you prefer the quicker racks though, like another guy on here (Nitram I think) who has chosen a 1 turn rack for his project

Good question. I think the MKII MR2 PS unit does have a slightly quicker rack (although I am not exactly sure what the difference is) than the MKI and the PS can be blocked off since I do not need it at all. But I don't really relish the idea of re-doing the rack mounts since my bump steer is perfect atm.

Oh no! a 1 turn rack will not do it for me! I do want a quick rack. However sneezing or looking at the mirrors should not cause me to leave the roadway! LOL

Exactly how much quicker I prefer I don't know, since the only experience I have is with sedan and production car racks. So a 2.9:1 eh? What is that out of?

Maybe the first thing I should do is get stiffer bushings for the rack. Then the turn-in will be crisper.

Bog standard Escort Mk2 but there must be a few others which would do the job equally as well for you.

Another option maybe to shorten the steering arms on the front uprights. This is the preferred method on old Alfas.

Are yours part of the casting or bolt on?

for 2.5 lock to lock there is always a sierra power rack with PAS blocked off

They are CAST dammit... So no joy there.

I am going to be using a very nice aftermarket steel upright/hub on my future cars (Desico Design), but would like to get this one working properly with the MR2 rack and uprights.

If I choose another rack it will have to be dimensionally identical to the MR2 unit currently in the car. My bumpsteer is 0 over the entire range and I like it that way. Easiest way to do that is to change the innards of the rack or a quickener inline to the column.

Anyone ever used those quickeners I show up above? I saw one being used on 'Monster Garage' when they turned a Chevy S10 into a Hill-climb for Pikes Peak.
