Sugestions on modifying/changing struts please
John Bonnett - 26/6/08 at 04:11 PM

I think this is hopeless but I'd like to run it by you anyway, if I may.

I'm running the complete 205GTI suspension on the rear of the trials car and the problem is that I cannot go any larger in diameter on the tyres because they will foul the spring pans.

I know I can buy a pair of Bilsteins with 2 1/4" diam springs that would solve the problem but I'm not prepared to pay their prices.

Any suggestions for a Locost solution?

Any answers gratefully received, thank you.

Sorry, I should have added the question, I would like to go larger diameter on the wheels and tyres, can you please suggest any possibilities on how to do this.

Hi

Spacers are not an option then.

The only option I can see is to change the angle of the wheel spindle to the strut and move the top of the strut inboard. don't know how easy this is - depends on the way the spindle is fixed to the strut and if there's room on the chassis.

I think Bilsteins are the easier - albeit more expensive option with the bonus of improved shock performance

How about these coil over converters from rally design, converts a strut into to a coil-over strut with 2 1/4 springs

I found this that describes how you do it, this is a homemade conversion but the principle is the same

My thanks to all of you who have replied particularly Minicooper who has found someone who has done the same job. Following the article, I'll have a go at stripping an old strut and see if I can source the adjustable seats. That should solve the problem without going to the expence of Billies.

I don't think I could easily change the angle of the struts and spacers would need to be enormous.

Once again, thank you all, will keep you posted with the results.

common problem with the 205s but billys are the job..

take a look at some ford shocks i measured mondeo ones a while back they were about same diameter at the bottom maybe sierra ones are the same or something else some rovers have something similar..
