Welding gas bottle problem

I've just gone to do a bit of welding and I've got a problem with my gas bottle. When I turn it on, gas escapes from the valve. The more you open it, the more the gas escapes. Have I done something wrong (can't think what) or is it knackered?

use ptfe tape on the thred.this will stop it

No, the gas isn't coming out of the thread, its coming out of the top where the handle is.

Sounds like the diaphram has split behind the knob, have look it may have just become dislodged.

Close the valve, ring BOC tell them the symptoms, ask them if it is safe to transport, if yes then return it, if no then they will pick it up and supply a replacement.

In the mean time treat as if an unexploded bomb, point the valve toward a wall and don't touch it again.

Is from the regulator? or the bottle itself? If bottle, yep contact BOC if the regulator take it off and strip and clean and put back together.

On the bottle not the regulator. Its strange because I've been using this bottle for weeks without problem, but today when I came to turn it on, it was all hissing. I've used it so much it must be getting empty now, so there's not much lost, only my time this evening.

When you ring them, tell them it was nearly full and it must have all leaked away. Locost refill.

Tell them you have just started using it, you should get a new one, if they start to argue, tell them HSE will be picking it up.

I've had a boc bottle leak at the spindle.

I believe they have what boc call a soft seal (probably ptfe).

If it's a CO2 cylinder it will not seal till the valve is fully open, turn it as far as it will go.

A very small amount of tightening of the nut (arrowed) solves the problem.

I imagine other bottles have a similar seal.

NO!

In the oil Indusrty we are taught ffrom Day1 NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE adjust any thing under pressure - So many fatal accidents have occured that way. Best bet is to call the Bottle distributor (BOC ??) and get them to "Fix" it.

I took it back to the shop (not BOC) and exchanged it. The new one works fine. Thanks for all the advice.
