Following on from my last computer thread, http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/38/viewthread.php?tid=152442
the computer bloke has diagnosed a motherboard failure, and recommends the laptop is scrap. Can't find a replacement motherboard for less than
the cost of a cheap laptop 
Good news is the data on the hard drive is OK and the hard drive works. 
If I buy a SATA / USB adaptor I should be able to get the data back onto the desktop.
If I buy a new laptop and stick the old disc drive in it, will I avoid having to reset all my settings, network connections, email settings etc?
Or if I boot up the desktop with the USB / SATA adaptor plugged in, will it think it's the old laptop?

If you are lucky - you might have to insert your windows disc and do a system repair - and it still might not work. I wouldn't go down this route
myself. It never seems to be very satisfactory for long even if if successful.

No
I would just get a 2.5" hard drive caddy for your old hard drive, get the new lappy and transfer your stuff over to it from the old hard drive
and set up that way. You will then have a spare portable hard drive in a caddy and a lappy that works
