yo will need to tape them in position and sit in the seat to make sure you have correct visibility before fixing them

Is the car SVA / IVA'D and on the road?

If this is PRE-IVA, then you need to read the manual, as there are specific requirements for the positioning (ie the view / coverage of the mirrors).

I failed my SVA on this. I should have read the Manual first. You could see everything, but they were just an inch too low, and caught the rear wings in the view to the nearest point on the ground that you needed to see for a pass. (a common issue on Se7en's)

Even if the car is on the road, I would still put them in the correct position.
1. It keeps the car legal.
2. It just might become a problem with insurance should you be involved in an accident and a smart Ass inpsector notice it.
3. You Know you have done it correctly.

You dont want to leave your self open to probelms however small they might be. Insurance not paying out or reducing their payout due to you putting your mirrors 1" too low (or wherever) etc. Its not worth the risk.
Do the job Right First Time.

EDIT:
I dont have a windscreen either.
Dont use the Honda wing mirrors that I used. They look nice, but have had the around the ball joint go on both of them, and then another one just gone in 5 years and 6k miles.
Got some nice sturdy metal ones now.

In my archive there are the pages from the SVA manual for the mirror positioning requirements.
However these are SVA and NOT IVA. So check the IVA manual and DONT use those ones in my archoive as they are out of date. The pics will demonstrate what I am talking about.
Cheers
