And how did you wire it?

I've got a start button, which I want to come on when the engine is off, and go off when the engine is running, ive also got some led warning lamps for oil pressure and actual ignition lamp, but I cant work out how to wire these properly. I know a normal bulb has to be used somewhere, but I cant work it out

Depends what alternator you've got. If you got a smart one it doesn't need to see a bulb so led is fine. My little Nippon denso is a smart control and works without any light.

Other LEDs : most are fine as is. Just indicator ones if your using as single light for both tell-tales. If you are then you'll need some diodes I believe.

Smart as in one with 'ignition sense' or similar name?
Its a nippon denso one I've got too, I'll need to find the model number on it.

Its these I bought. Set of 4, but only using red and amber. Ive got 25mm holes cut in the dash from whoever had it before I want to fill with them, these were the nearest I could find

Mines no. 2 or 3 so don't know what yours is but you could always see if it's producing 14.5v without the light installed

I've got the old Pinto alterntator on mine and have an LED on the dash. I put a normal warning light, like this http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/plain-bezel-warning-light-battery-ignition-red, in parallel with the LED to excite the alternator.

I just used the led light that came with the bright six cluster it was used witb a standard lucas 17acr alternator for years without problems.

Stick a 100 ohm resistor across the LED to allow enough current back to excite the alternator.

I also had to fit a 2nd diode to stop it running on.

I had someone telling me it was impossible, couldn't be done, but i was sure it could. theres a few options to try there though thanks!

if mines a type 4, with battery sense, ignition sense, and seperate warning terminal, I don't imagine it should be a problem. surely one of the battery or ignition connections should do the job of exciting the coils, leaving the lamp connection just to light a lamp?

I've got a type 4, I'm not using the battery sense though as I read it was not required, and didn't really know what it was. Is it just an unswitched 12v supply? Anyway, it's been ok for about 350 miles so far.

Oil pressure light can be led or a lamp, should make no difference as it's just a simple switch to earth. I'm using an incandescent for the alternator lamp and it works fine.

For your start button light, I borrowed a trick from someone else. If you connect the earth connection from the LED light to your oil pressure switch, it will be on when there's no pressure, and goes off when there is - it's the easy way to tell if the engine is running or not. It takes a feed from switched +12v so it comes on with the ignition, press the button, engine starts, light goes off.
