daniel mason - 14/3/12 at 07:09 PM

im currently in the market for a cheap diesel tow car £2500 max.
when i came across a skoda octavia with 2.5 v6 tdi. with history and reasonable mileage. anyone know much about these motors? mpg, any known faults, expensive problems etc. or would i be better looking at the 1.9 pd engined cars instead? cheers all

I had a passat company car with one fitted, a nice engine but they don't have the urge of the 1.9, you can feel the weight in the crank when its revving. Nice to drive though, about 10mpg worse than a 1.9 engine.

For a few quid more you could have my a3 tdi quattro

Get a 1.9 tdi much better and cheaper on parts . Better MPG.......

When I was looking into boat building a few years back I mentioned this engine to a friend (specialist vw/audi indie servicing) and he gave me, from the top of his head a timetable of when failures were likely to happen

thanks franky but my budget is strict. my mnr has cost me a small fortune. cant afford any more.
i would have thought that a fully serviced low miler (70k) would be very reliable? torque and towing ability are more important than top end performance. cheers all

I had my company car from new, went to 113k with no issues, then the turbo went, took it onto 140k before it went back, no issues apart from the turbo.

Early versions got a bad reputation over fuel pumps and camshafts made of cheese, if its in a skoda it'll be a later version that's alot stronger. If you can get a decent example for 2.5k with 70k on the clock go for it.

its a 52 plate though, so is quite old now!

My old a4 1.9 tdi towed nicely. Not saying there is anything wrong with the suggested engine either.

130 or even better 150bhp 1.9pd will tow a treat, be cheaper run, maintain and insure. There's also 100's to choose from in the VAG family meaning you'll get better choice on colour, trim, history, miles etc. Seems an easy choice to me!

its just the initial purchase cost of the 1.9 pd. a 130 or 150 wiyh 70k would be close to double the price. at least £1-2k more anyway

Not exepienced the v6 2.5 VAG diesel but if it's anywhere near as good as the older 5 cylinder VAG 2.5 diesel it will be a worthy contender. Excellent lump that was, bit noisy but a notch above the 1.9

Was that not the motor used for VAG commercial vehicles; transporter etc? I seem to recall that that was one half of a truck engine...maybe one bank of the V10 TDI truck engine fitted to the Toureg?
