Part worn winter tyres?

I had a brain wave last night (After a few pints) and was thinking there was a massive rush for winter tyres this year and last year but most people I know don't own spare sets of wheels or have space for such a thing so my question is, can you get part worn winter tyres and would they be worth having?

Guy from work got some part worn winter tyres from Germany for his BMW. IIRC they become illegal at 5mm tread out there, so plenty of life left in them for a normal UK winter.

Ebay is ( or was) full of them, all 4mm approx so no good in europe. In fact I suspect they are not great even for UK snow, you need plenty of tread.
I picked a set up that had done 1000 miles or so and were 2 weeks old for a very reasonable sum. So yes, they do turn up, and can be excellent value.

Is it worth looking for a set now to put in the garage?

Have a look on Ebay, there's plenty of part worn winters on there. I've thought about getting some, but by the time I'd factored in the price of swapping the tyres over I'd found brand new ones for similar prices.

They're certainly a better option than part worn summer tyres, at least there is a reason to remove winter tyres before the end of life.

Was the snow really that bad that we needed full winter snow tyres??
For me it was caution on standard tyres on my tin top
I think I remember 2 or 3 challenging days getting to work through the country lanes
In fact the recent fog caused more problems

I bought my first set (part worn) a few years ago and was very happy with them. however this year I bought a set for the wifes car and 1 showed signs of a bulged tread after a few days, and the other a bulge in the side wall. Sadly there is no way to prove they were like that when purchased so wasted a few quid.
