
So chatting to a mate the other day and he mentioned that his 1999 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8 V6 had a broken rear spring and since it also has a couple of
rust spots he was going to buy a new daily driver..hmmmmm....how much do you want for it? £300!!! done!
Picked it up yesterday and it starts on the button and even with the rear spring issue drives ok. So plan is:
1. Change springs for a full set of 45mm lowering springs Approx £150
2. Completely strip interior and fit Polycarb rear windows and remove rear door internals to see how much weight i can loose.
3. Construct a basic roll cage consisting of a single hoop behind the front seats with a horizontal bar for attaching belts to, with 2 supports from
the hoop to the rear top suspension mounts Approx Cost of material £140
4. Fit a set of cheap buckets and 4 point harnesses, already purchased off ebay for the princley sum of £80
So a cheap V6 4WD track toy for under £800 less whatever i can get for an Audi A4 leather interior...hmmm PPC £999 challenge candidate mebbe?

Perfect for a crack at £999 I'd say - flog a few of the bits you remove and use the change to fund a set of sticky tyres and it's job pretty much done.
I'd be awfully tempted by a bit of historic BTCC stickerage.

The brakes will be shot in about 4 or 5 laps....

To be fair.
It's a car of what might be called a certain age with a V6 engine.
£300 is undoubtedly a great price, but with petrol costing £6.36 a gallon, it's always going to have a limited market.
Even if perfect, it's always going to be a sub £1000 car and I suspect most people buying at that level (of which I have bought and will buy
again many times) will not be counting on the thirst of a V6.
As ever, I could be wrong, but I think Snakebelly has got a great deal on a car which suits his needs to a tee.
Good point on the brakes, have a line on some A6 front hubs and brakes for 250 which are apparently a straight swap and about 10kg a side lighter with
bigger brakes but waiting to see what the interior brings first
Love the stickers and I just happen to have a vinyl cutter already....
Agreed it was never going to make good money but I reckon the price is still very right for what it's going to be used for

As a former £999 winner I'd say it'll be an ideal candidate, especially if the format gets changed to
a proper sprint event like they're proposing. Strip it out, get the lowest springs you can (to allow for the weight loss) or cheap coilovers,
sticky tyres and bigger brakes

Another good day yesterday, Door Cards Removed, the inside of the rear doors has been removed as well. Drivers seat fitted and passenger seat just
needs 2 small tabs fitting and that can go in, picking up rollcage tubing on Tuesday and wed taking it to the benders to get the main hood formed.
hopefully the cage and seats will be 100% done by next weekend leaving just the springs and fitting of new brake pads and changing of the brake fluid
then she will be ready for a trackday.

If you can find a set of Audi TT brake caliper carriers you can upgrade to 312mm disks on the front which will help, but dont pay more than £50 for a pair.
Is that retaining the same calipers? Will they fit under the standard 16" wheel?
So slight change of plan on the cage the 2" CDs was too big for what we wanted so gone down to 38mm, total cost of tube and bending from Mac1
Motosport was £110 and called in a favour from a fabricator mate of mine yesterday that cost me 3 coffees and 2 bacon and sausage rolls for a total of

If the brakes were shot, and that was one of the reason the car was cheap and they're needed doing for an MOT, then yes you need to add them
on.

that cage needs diagonal bracing and the tubes look too thin considering the weight of the car (non professional opinion). bloody good bargain though.
they are 38mm so 1" 1/2" which is plenty big enough, to be honest though its main function is not as rollover protection but as a mount for the belts, hence no diag
I'd agree you'd be a lot better off with at least one diagonal. Without one it's just balast and it's not like one length of tube is going to break the bank.
Bit late now but if you just wanted for a belt mount you could have used the steel to make a rear strut brace for less weight and put the belts off that.
unfortunately the belts arent long enough and im not buying new belts!
First day out at donnington today, have renamed it the hindenberg as its german and handles like an airship :-) Was all ging well until we developed a
rather massive exhaust failure that took us over the sound limit, still racked up nearly 90 miles though.
Shame to have it cut short by something as simple as an exhaust!
Donnington is such a good looking track, well the first 3rd is anyway!

Not that I know anything about this, but surely maintenance parts shouldn't come within the budget? I mean what if I wanted to enter my "soon to be ex daily driver" and it needed a few parts? How far back does a maintenance bill go?
