My mate in Derby has a J5 (and used to have a J4).
His J5 has a 1500 pre-crossflow but like most kit cars is in need of a bit of TLC.

Hi

which 4 speed box is it specifically. Many of the locost racers use the original type 2 Escort box which has the integral bell housing and a screw in gear leaver. They are the shorter gearbox and many make extension contraptions that bring the leaver rearward by 4-6". However not many of them even when highly engineered work particularly well.

However if you have the bigger type 3 or type9 4 speed or rocket or.... there's more than one description for it. with the separate bellhousing then there's two types of gear lever attachment on is the same as the Escort and screws in the other has a 3 bolt fitting the same as the type 9 5 speed if it is a 3 bolt fitting then there is available from Westfield and rally design an off the shelf extension that works quite well.

The other option is to remove the gear lever and check that the plastic bush that sits between the gear lever lower fork and the gear selector shaft in in as new condition. This can make a hell off a difference by fitting a new one if it is broke or worn. However if you have the type 2 Escort box not many of those boxes where fitted with these clips only some. the ones that where not have a round steel bush and leaves no room for improvement unless it well knackered and a new one needs to be made. other option is to very lightly squash the fork at the very bottom to close the gap as these can become spread open if it has received agresive use during it's life.

Cheers Matt
