Has the pleasure gone out of driving?
r1_pete - 31/12/08 at 01:27 PM

Did a long journey yesterday on mostly unfamiliar roads, but instead of feeling satisfied at getting the business done and having enjoyed the drive, I'm now thinking how often did I stray above the speed limit, did I see all the cameras, was I being overtaken as well as overtaking etc. etc. and basically willing the next 14 days away, to be sure I didn't get caught off guard.

Does anyone else get that feeling, or am I just being paranoid........

You're just being paranoid.

Nope you are not being paranoid, wwe basically now where ever we go have to constantly stare at the speedo in case we accidentally go over the limit.... so instead of looking where we are going ...... we are looking at the speedo, shurly that cannot be safe ????

but i see your point and know exactly what you mean, the law very seldom lets you off if you are even only slightly speeding these days ( unless they cannot be bothered to do the paper work )

but you can forget all that when you are in the kitcar and on familiar roads.... driving along with the wind in your helmet !!!!

i know the feeling, its not nice...
hope you dont get any nasty surprises in the mail

Might be worth an investment in some "detection" equipment to help revive the fun.

FFS you are joking are'nt you??

If your underage, robber, mugger, burglar, vandal etc etc then you DO get let off (or 95% of the time not caught) lightly.
However your statement should read " if you can be traced, and have the money to pay a fine then we (the government) WILL find a way and fund it (With our tax money) of tracing you and taking your money.

SO in sumation if your a bad un and have nothing then "please yourself how you behave we as the government are not bothered cause your no use to us"
If you've got a job and cash and are relatively law abiding/fearing then "LOOK OUT WE ARE AFTER YOUR CASH."

On the other hand, surely its better not to speed at all, especially during this time of year?

Im not saying I stick to the limit all the time, but surely if you get a NIP through the post, then its your fault? Thats the way I would see it if it happenend to me!

Not saying I deliberately strayed above the limit, the speedo needle never went past vertical - 80 mph, sat nav says thats 77, and it bongs at 76, or 10% or so above any limit it knows.

Its just that feeling, what if, cos you can never remember 100% of any journey, and its right spending more time concentrating on speed must reduce other concentration, and driving pleasure..

I guess it depends what sort of mood you are in...

I still get much pleasure from doing "spirited" drives in the mountains at 2:00 in the morning.... A decent set of headlights and its awsome...

Likewise, I get great pleasure from doing long cross country drives to/from somewhere without using all the "regular" roads... (Oh, and satnav=CHEATING!)

But yes... I do get infuriated if I have to drive any distance during the day and want to have some fun.... if the speed limit is NSL I EXPECT people to be doing atleast 60 on a straight road without dabbing the brakes every second....

You can have fun driving without once exceeding the speed limit...... .... ... apparently

Round my way there are blessedly few cameras. I rarely look at my speedo, it's miles out anyway! I go as fast or slow as I feel like going at the time. Some times I my be running along at 45-50 enjoying the views. Others I may be going at a higher speed and giving driving my full attention. Although I do appreciate that not everyone lives in such a rural area where a lot of the roads are twisty and fun. Or has such roads, but lots of those silly yellow boxes all over the place to ruin the fun.

Going fast for the sake of going fast isn't that exciting (otherwise we'd drive Yank tanks with stupidly big engines and rubbish handling).... You get used it speed quite rapidly and then where's the fun?

The enjoyment is the twisty bits. The great thing about a 7 is the grip. So surely the challenge and enjoyent are in keeping to the speed limit even round round-abouts, tight corners etc

I've got a rag-route I take where I never go more than about 5% above the limit (and then by accident) and yet it's great fun and tricky to drive. The only time I doing anything even slightly naughty is next to Hampstead Heath where there are some obscenely big mansion blocks (mostly owned by rich bankers who have taken millions as bonuses for having shagged the economy). They've got their own security guard in a van in the street. It's not a private road so I don't see what the fake doughnut eater is going to do about the big fat 11s I leave next to his van What's he going to do, write about me in a notepad? OH no! Anything but that!!! Anyway, I don't break the speed limit, I just do burn-outs next to his van

i never really worry about it, you'd have to be blind to miss a fixed camera, and theres not much you can do about mobile ones except stick within 20% of the limit (figuring you can brake 10% off that before you get rumbled!).

So i'd say, if you feel paranoid, make sure you really arent going too fast!
