Cars your really want but shouldn't
Benzine - 16/11/09 at 09:59 PM

ITT: cars you wouldn't normally admit to liking, cars you really desire but you can't explain why. Bonus points if they're awful.

Peugeot 309

Renault 4

coozer - 16/11/09 at 10:02 PM

Morris Marina 1.8TC
Montego Turbo, the nutter cosworth beater..
Model T Ford
Austin 7...
69 Ford Mustang
70's Holden Monaro

All awful bags of shite I would love on the drive

Humbug - 16/11/09 at 10:15 PM

Lol - I had a Renault 4 as my first car. Known as Elvis because it would shake, rattle and roll

Very cheap to run and very practical - I got an unfurnished flat and the rear bench seat, which had the back and base hinged together, acted as a sofa for several weeks before I got an old fifteenth hand sofa donated by someone.

Mind you, I did have to get two new front shocks after I took off (deliberately...) over a humpbacked bridge.

There really is something to be said for a low powered car that you can drive on the limit.

scootz - 16/11/09 at 10:19 PM

Went through a mid-90's period of hankering over both of these (but thankfully having the sense not to actually do it!).

Nova Sport
Chevette
Hillman Avenger
Dolly Sprint
Opel Kadett Coupe
Vuxhall Ventora (one on Pistonheads at the moment with Rover V8 for £1800....)
Mk1 & 2 Escort
Escort RS 1600i
Escort RS Turbo (S1)

In fact, I'll be selling the Indy in spring, and have my eye out for one of the above (Nova Sport would be nice, but the others would definately be in line for some sort of 16v or V6 conversion...)

Yep, I like that rather a lot!

morcus - 16/11/09 at 10:58 PM

I want another 205.
My list would include, Citroen DS, SM, XM and CX
Peugeot 505 and 309
Rover SD1, P5, P6 and 800
Jenson Interceptor
Jaguar XJS
Cadillac CTS, BLS and the MkII Seville
The most embarasing car I've ever desired is the Mitsibishi Pajero Mini.

StevieB - 16/11/09 at 11:01 PM

Oops, I also forgot frogeye sprite.

Another one on my possible list of next projects - take an old midget, sort it out, stick a bike engine in it and fit it with a grp tifosi rana frogeye body. Remove windscreen and fit a couple of brooklands screens, roll bar and tonneau and painted in Jim Clarke colours.

Rob - the metro IS a guilty pleasure indeed, but one I can agree with.

Oh Neil - No No NO!!!
A mate had a R5 Godini and I've done about half a mile as a guest in a 6R4 on a special stage in a blackpool rally - the whole point to the (nearly) standard R5GTT is that there were millions of them at one point, complete clitoris cars, doors that dopped 3inches after 17miles from new etc etc - But what can I say - I love them! A friend had one in that colour and had a stupidly massive set of wheels on (We used to do Trim work for Terry of Dimma designs and they were a cast off from one of hil creations (think 306))

liam.mccaffrey - 17/11/09 at 12:35 AM

Beautiful car that toyota, it reminds me of a 68/69 chevelle but its not quite as nice

I have a big thing for american pickups. If I was buying new it would be a dodge ram 3/4 ton. With the cummins v8 diesel.

Buying used I'd go for a circa 78 chevrolet 1/2 ton

(apart from the Skoda, that would be cool!)

morcus - 17/11/09 at 02:11 AM

I forgot, I wanted the original Honda Insight, I tried to find one but I could only find a 2000 plate one (you still had to pay tax on the old system, the newer ones were tax exemt) and was £5K plus £4K for insurance.

In terms of real guilty pleasures, while the 309 comes close, I'm a Nova lover at heart. And what I really want, I occassionally buy, even though I shouldn't. Picked this up on Sunday: 25 years old and only 25k miles!

Maseratti Ghibli.

As seen here and here.

Alarmingly cheap to buy. Potentially disasterous to run... or at least as expensive as something like a F348.

kj - 17/11/09 at 03:49 PM

MG Montego turbo, loved it, quick as f*%$

Renault Fuego

Suzuki whizz kid, small and the engine in the back not very fast but was fun.

Citroen ax gt

MG Meastro 2.0

MG Meastro 1.6 with twin carbs and talking dash.

Vauxhall Farenza

The Vauxhall Chevette makes a good, cheap, donor vehicle. The only viable one for North America unless you count the ultimate hairdresser car, the Miata/MX5, an expensive poofmobile. Not that I'm being judgemental.

You'll be lucky, I read about the T16 years ago and the guy had to get a spare part from the Peugeot museum as that was the only other one in existence!

Is it really bad that I'm thinking "Yeah!" at most of the cars here?

I'd have the Nissan Sunny again, most comfortable seat ever it was almost like an armchair!

iank - 22/11/09 at 10:39 AM

Wouldn't be beyond the talents of some here to make a replica of the T16. Front end looks pretty much standard up to the B pillar, and a mould for the rear clam could be taken from the donor after some modification for the vents. Z-cars style cage/engine subframe and you've got a rather desirable car (IMO).

I think some people haven't really got the idea of this thread, and are posting pics of tasteful cars.

How about a Dolomite, not the Sprint, but an 1850, and an automatic one at that. Yes, I was that dolomite owner (nice car too )

StevieB - 25/11/09 at 05:48 PM

I can't post piccies anymore, otherwise I'd be able to post a confession or two!

Liam - 25/11/09 at 06:15 PM

What's with all the group B monsters and other awesome stuff? This is supposed to be cars you really want, but shouldn't!! Anyway, here's mine. Learned to drive in a poverty spec 1.6 LS and longed for the ultimate version. Oh yes - the Vauxhall Cavalier GSi 2000...

Ok that's the later turbo 4x4, and of course the dream was revised when it came out, but the exotic and futuristic sounding GSi 2000 was the original object of desire.

I used to sit in our's reading the owners manual, imagining our blanks filled with all the extra switches of the top-of-the-range model, the plastic wood trim bits being there, sitting on leather, the gear stick going up to 6... aaahhhhhh such sweet longing.

Never got round to owning one, and never will now, because if the owners manual for the Cavalier showing all the top model features was a source of boyhood desire, getting the brochure for the Omega Elite was like being introduced to porn! I am now living that greater dream!! Oh yes, I have made it.

morcus - 26/11/09 at 02:28 AM

I tried to buy a 5 door Cavallier (Twice) I think on was a 1.6 and the other a 1.8, I went to see them both at garages that had them in there to clear bit, Then the 205 came on the market whilst I was deliberating and I got that (One of my dream cars, 3 dr, white with a 1.6 and an Auto box that didn't like changing direction).

I remeber when my Grandad bought his Rover 200, I think that was something of a dream car to him.
