The other thing missing from out building quote was painting. The current finish is bare plaster and wood, with no fittings and fixtures at the
moment. We bought the paint ourselves and the builders were to quote for painting. They've come back with £700 inc VAT. The building is about
6 metres long and 2 wide. The quote was for emulsioning the walls and ceiling plus glossing the door frames and skirting boards.
I'm tempted to take a week of work, send them off site for a week and do it myself. Before that, I want to give them chance to do it for a
reasonable fee. What's the going rate for a painter?
Round this neck of the wood £75-100 per day.

DIY means days off work. I'm happy to pay a day rate for someone to do it. £700 is for 7 days work and it just won't take that.
my neighbours a decorator hes charging me £150 to paint and paper the landing and staircase, (mates Rates) going rate would be £250 once again leg and
lift. If your just emulsioning and glossing about 2 days tops.

going rate around here is £60 to £80 sounds like two days work at most...........try phoning some painters in your area..................
Other option is to speak to one of the blokes who hang around outside Wickes (or they do round my neck of the woods). Cheap labour even if the immigration status is often a bit on the dodgy side....
The painting and tiling quotes sounds to me like he's under quoted for the main job and is now trying to claw some back on the unspecified
work.
Keep an eye to make sure he's not cutting corners elsewhere.
Specifically on the painting if you can cut in then rollering on the emulsion should be an evening or four's work (2 eves for the ceiling, 2 for
the walls assuming 2 coats each).

Do it in the evening instead of watching telly or whenever you get home from work if you do shifts. A weekend should see it done otherwise. I'd do something like that myself rather than think how much I'm getting ripped off for and having to inspect it after. My wife and I do all ours anyway, the hardest part is keeping up with her (and picking the paint)
Ask around your friends and neighbours - you can usually find a recommended painter. Maybe their daily rate will be the same, but perhaps
they'll give you an honest estimate of time...
