A Judge with sense
Paul (Notts) - 29/4/10 at 06:49 PM

Can't condone what he did but full understand it....

Yesterday I was a TWAT

Today I had a bin kicked at me for removing a boy from a class room he should not have been in.

i was hoping all week he would get cleared! Result

theconrodkid - 29/4/10 at 06:57 PM

when i were a lad we got the cane/slipper/detention etc if we messed about...very few people messed about as they knew the consequences,as for swearing at a teacher, that would never have happened.
i hope he is found not guilty of the other charge as well and the cane is re-introduced

No other charge is there? He pleaded guilty to GBH so will get sentenced for that.

I believe the judge will interpret the juries decision that he was severely provoked, and thus sentence leniantly.

Judge said the time he has spent on remand covers any sentence for GBH so only gets comunity service which will be set to help his current mental condition.

A1 - 29/4/10 at 07:34 PM

since I first heard the story I thought the little sh*t probably deserved it.
Glad to see common sense prevail!

Nice, comon sense from the jury AND common sense from the judge.

If you read the article, he has been found guilty of that which he admitted to, but no custodial sentence as he has already served more on remand than he can have a sentence suspended for, so it is just a comunity service type sentence and back to work.

When I was in school we had a teacher who rather sadistically liked slippering a pupil from each lesson, but most of the teachers imposed punishment as was due. On one occassion I saw a pupil take a swing at our rather portley form master, he was promptly chased all over the school by the said form master despite his VERY portly size. Punishment was swift (ish) and the crime was never repeated OR more importantly the punishment was not complained about.

When I was in my first year at secondary school, we did games with the 2nd years - one of said 2nd years was picking on one of 1st years.

Teacher clumped bully around the head. Bully dropped like a stone.

Spotted cricket ball in teacher's hand

Said teacher also carried a cat'o'nine tails in his case!

Said bully was expelled three years later for reason's you don't want to know

Forget asbo's, bring back the stocks!

Felt sorry for the Teacher tbh

He'd obviously been under alot of strain and the Little Bas***ds had set him up to be filmed etc

Too much 'Do Gooding' going on these days
The kids seem to know the Law well and how far adults can go with discipline

Good thrashing now and again never hurt nobody
We had a couple of Teachers at my secondary school who scared the sh*t out of us
There was NEVER any trouble in their classes

Did you know that the life expectancy for teachers in the UK is 5 years less than the national average?

I think that can be solely attributed to little ar$eholes like that, I agree too that it's the fault of too much do-gooding! The grades achieved in my school have gotten worse year on year since they cracked down on bullying - a slef monitoring student body became a lawless one as in reality the teachers were powerless over pupils!

l0rd - 29/4/10 at 10:18 PM

My point of view as being a college lecturer.

The little b****rs get away with everything.

Colleges (not sure for schools) get funding for successful outcomes only. A learner doesn't achieve a qualification you don't get any money.

eg.

I had a good learner last year who due to his life difficulties, drugs and general behavior was asked to leave the classroom.

He threatened me, called me names, provoked me to a fight etc....

He was suspended for 2 weeks.

I couldn't even touch him to push him out of the classroom. It's my a**e on the line.

Do you also know that all teachers and lecturers do not have a personal life?

more than 60% of us get divorced.

James - 29/4/10 at 11:44 PM

When I was about 10 we had a teacher who we would wind up till he snapped almost *every* day!

We knew what he was like before even moving into that class. He would go bright red, stand with his finger shaking with fury pointed 2" in front of your face and shout and bellow. The real game was once we'd got him this far and doing this to someone, we'd stand behind the screaming teacher and make faces and impersonnate him to make the bloke he was shouting at laugh!

I can't imagine what went through this poor bastards mind every morning when the alarm went off... but I can't imagine he felt very good. I actually feel a bit guilty about the hell we put him though!

We did nothing all year about from muck about.

On the last day of school that year I remember telling my Mum that it'd been a wasted year and I'd learnt nothing apart from decimal points!

The sad thing, is I know that our behaviour was probably repeated by the next year after us!

Would beating/caning/whipping us have helped? I don't know, there actually *was* quite a lot of violence in the school inflicted by the teachers. I remember the same teacher throwing a student bodily across a desk where he gashed his leg open and him picking someone else up by their tie whilst shouting at him. I remember the head taking a kid down a narrow corridor to his office- bouncing him off the brick walls all the way down like a pin ball!

Didn't stop us misbehaving though... it was just part of the game!

This was only 20 years ago by the way!

Cheers,
James

steve m - 30/4/10 at 02:11 AM

It didnt affect you james ???

tell us about your hobby , mmm you know the one, its about kicking people !!!

(only joking James !!)

I do believe the way i was schooled 1965-1976, was the correct way, i was canned, and had numerous detentions, for doing what i really dont remember,
but i can remember being summond to Mr Barnes (headteacher) at 1600, and from 0900 i felt so sick i thought i was going to die

IT REALLY WAS THAT SCAREY !

now i doubt the kids give a toss

Daddylonglegs - 30/4/10 at 07:57 AM

Same sort of era for my education too. I remember our Science teacher used to 'control' the boy's behaviour by 'encouraging' offending boys across the science bench by their sideburns You only messed him around once!

The head was somewhat of a dab-hand with the cane too, never missed the mark!

We wouldn't have dreamed of swearing at a teacher back then, fate worse than death!

alistairolsen - 30/4/10 at 08:37 AM

While I agree that kids are too far out of line and something needs done to redress the power balance in schools, he DID lamp a kid with a steel dumbell to the point he thought he'd killed him.

I have mixed feelings. I suspect his career is over as a teacher, but then maybe that's a good thing given he suffered stress before returning to work and snapping violently.

FFTS - 30/4/10 at 08:43 AM

Firstly I will say that I totally agree with the outcome and have great sympathy for the guy and maybe a bit for the lad with a fractured skull.. lots of us may have done as bad things but a fractured skull with a dumbbell didn't have the punishment fit the crime.
I certainly believe that since kids became untouchable that they have no consequence to fear. However there is a word of warning..

We had a teacher who liked severely beating children as his hobby and he did it regular for very little reason. Used his fists in class on seated pupils and the worst occasions had a girl by the hair and about a 4" patch came out and bleeding and dragged another girl by her arm across the floor resulting in forearm. Outside of school he would have been a child abusing criminal. In those days because he had the title Teacher he had free reign to enjoy himself.

Punishment yes but those of you with kids wouldn't want a guy like this anywhere near yours with a license to beat and abuse them.

cd.thomson - 30/4/10 at 08:53 AM

"if you cant hack the banter then step out of the class room" was the response various lads in my school (traditional single sex grammar) used to give to teachers going red in the face.

Lets face it, children and adolescents are d***s. They have no real concept of social boundaries and like to push adult's buttons.

There were two types of teacher at my school, those that could hack it and those that couldnt. Those who had a firm hand but treated us with respect and didn't rise to any of the initial teasing will forever have my respect. Those who gave any kind of emotional response to the low level stuff left the school - sometimes within weeks.

ETA: i do agree with the outcome, but smashing a kids head in for winding him up? Fair enough on a friday night when there is equal threat of physical violence back at you...but in a classroom? hmmm

Yeah but "back in the day" those buttons would be the 'get the cane out' buttons!

Well my stepdaughter is 12 and as big as me, my stepson is 15 and about a head taller. By the look of things if these kids started provoking me like that I'd have to proper lamp one of them just to get them off me.

Neither condoning or not condoning his actions but teachers are going to have to be allowed to do something cos we're bringing up a bunch of ****holes that think no-one can do anything about what they do.

scootz - 30/4/10 at 06:51 PM

Lol... I was waiting for this one to take a turn!

I'm all too aware of the provocation that kids can dish out, but to allow things to get to a point where you lose it and smack a kid repeatedly on the head whilst shouting "die, die, die"... WTF???

Wonder what the general consensus would have been had it been a Copper? Being wound up by the same little darlings day-in and day-out. Finally loses it and repeatedly smacks one on the head with his baton whilst shouting "die, die, die"! Methinks he would be looking at a long time in the pokey. I also think he would be getting a serious slagging on various web-forums for being a fascist bully!

They're both adults... they both have professional occupations... they both work in a pressurized environment (the police officers possibly more-so)... both could very well be salt-of-the-earth type blokes, yet they would both be treated very differently!

I could be wrong of course... I frequently am!

Jasper - 1/5/10 at 11:53 AM

It was brought home to me the other day just what teenagers can be like at the moment. My step duaghter had a good education at a nice school for many years. A year ago she starts going out with a local chav.

Last week we had to report her missing to the police as she buggered off and wouldn't tell us where she was. Whilst the police were round at ours taking the details she came home. I couldn't believe the way she spoke to them (and us) NO respect whatsoever, no fear, no nothing. Trouble is all these kids know NOBODY can touch them, and just do what the f*ck they like, when they like. The nice police lady handled her really well, but end of the day all she could do was walk away ....

We had the cane in my school growing up, and yes, there were absuses of power, but we did learn some respect along the way and got an education.

Ninehigh - 2/5/10 at 05:47 AM

Should someone go to prison because I poked them in the nuts every hour on the hour for two years and they snapped?

And if that was my son talking to the Police like that he'd have gone in with my foot up his rear and I don't care if the Police see it. That's the way I was disciplined and you know what, I still have some.
