
Hi, need to find out what the amp rate is of the fuse that controls the cold start relay on the Ford 1.8 Turbo diesel. It is fuse number 7 on the
wiring diag, but nowhere in the Haynes book does it give the size of it, and in my case it's missing.

If it's going to feed the glow plugs I imagine it'd be 30A
You could always try from the smallest and use the one that doesn't pop straight away..
Which car is it?
It's not a car, but a couple of marine engines that are for my boat.The only thing that I know about them is that thay are ex-Mondeo lumps marinised. Really thought that somebody on LCB would have done work on them, but Hey Ho there is always a time when the LCB will let you down, but this is the first time for me, :-) Will have to just get some big fuses and try them one at a time. You could always measure the resistance of them.
Then V=Ir
so
12= Ir
Then multiply by 4 ( no of glow plugs)and you'll have a ball park figure.
As long as your cable/wiring/switching capacity is higher than the fuse rating you will not have a fire.

Ah! hadn't thought of doing it that way, will give it a go. As I understand it you would then need to make the fuse 20% larger to make sure it
didn't blow each time you used it? Cheers Ray

Well I was hoping you was going to say early mondeo or escort... I'll have a look for a cold start relay on mine
20% should be fine. Another way would be if you had a multimter that measured up to 10 amps. You could connect it up to a single glowplug and take a reading the again multiply by 4
Right tried it with the four glow plugs, as they are already wired up and got a reading of 0.6 Ohms. 12v / 0.6 = 20 + 20% = 24 so I think that a 25
Amp fuse is going to be up to the job, can always increase to 30 Amps if neaded as the wiring will stand 50 Amps, or thats what VWP book say's

NINEHIGH. I think that one is early Mondeo, and the other early Escort, and around 90's, as one has the standard bolts holding the head
down, and the other has the star bolts. Both I add "seem" to be in very good nick.
