
As a psych major, I have no books and learned no methods to figger this out.
I bought an electric hoist (see photo) that will lift 880 lbs and the hoist itself weighs about 40 lbs. Mounting clamps on the top accept 1.625"
outside diameter tubing (in a horizontal orientation).
I want a 6' span between vertical supports. Will 1/8" wall steel tubing be able to support 920 lbs in the center? If not, and assuming
I'm limited to the 1.625" outside dimension, what should I use?

You can use an "I" beam to cover the 6 feet distance and a short 1.6" tube mounted in the clamps.
Weld some hooks on the short 1.6"tube and place them over the beam.
