5th Gear 'race'
David Jenkins - 12/10/04 at 10:39 AM

Anyone watch 5th Gear last night? Particularly the 'race' between a racing powerboat, GP bike and Jenson Button's F1 car?

It would have been a lot more interesting if they'd had a F1 powerboat instead of a sea-going endurance racer - the F1's can accelerate at an incredible rate...

Hhhhmmmm - the whole thing was a Honda PR event. Therefore I can't imagine that it was a fair comparison.

While watching I did some quick power to weight calc's in my head and could have predicted the outcome.

1) Bike - 200bhp and 160Kg = 1250bhp/tonne
2) Car - 900bhp and 600Kg = 1500bhp/tonne
3) Boat - 220bhp and 1000Kg = 220bhp/tonne

Wasn't a fair fight

The running start for the boat complicated the matter but with so little power, a top speed of 75mph and so much weight it couldn't compete.

Why use F1 car and BSB bike, motogp honda's have another 40bhp and top speed of around 215mph.

That would have made it a fairer fight;

Bike - 240bhp and 160Kg = 1500bhp/tonne

I'm not sure that the F1 boys would have wanted that

Afterall F1 is the pinnacle of motor sport don't cha know - can't lose to some scruff on a bike.

I think the min weight is 155 or 150 as well so at 150kg = 1600bhp/ton........that's more like it!!

should've had a Top fueler too ... that'd have made everything else look practically pedestrian !
