Anyone here into cycling?
Ok, I have £400 to spend on a bike, for onroad and offroad. I cycle 40+ miles at a time along byways etc. so it must be pretty robust. I would prefer
a hard tail aswell, front suspension, disc brakes.
Any ideas on a suitable bike?

Now lets be a bit more serious
i was and only 229
Found this, full suspension but i like!

I have a trek alpha 4300, 24 speed, disc brakes front and rear, quick shift and front suspension. I don't really like rear suspension it feels
like you are waisting energy with the bike going up and down. (doesn't make sense) it was £399.
very good
I have a Specilaized hardrock which I have had for over 4 years now. No trouble at all. Many miles and still on the same derailuer and front mech but
have upgraded the froks and brakes. I personally think that you can't beat specialized for value for money. The basic models allways seem to get
good reviews. For 400 I think you would get ally frame, a half decent pair of Rock Shox forks and discs. Maybe even hydro' discs nowadays too!
I also believe that you really shouldn't buy a full sus bike for under 800. They never seem to work properly and as mentioned above take some of
the energy out of the pedalling to bounce up and down! Better off with a hardtail.
Hope this helps,
Andy

Heres an example, sorry no price as its from the Specialized website. I would assume its around 350, the pro disc modelmaybe closer to 400. Thinking
about it you may even be ableto by an entry level rockhopper for 400. They're a bit better then the hardrock.

I have a Giant roadbike with a suspension seatpost. Don't get knobblies if you ride on the road, they soak up 15% of your pedal effort before you go anywhere. Get something with 700's on and you'll find roadwork a lot easier. Disk brakes are overkill on a pushbike I can lift the rear with the 'V' brake on mine no problem. Whatever you get's going to be a compromise if you want it to do everything.
According to this the Pro-Disc is £499.99.
Sport disc looks good though!

Pete, the reason im looking for disc brakes is I do a lot of offroad (greenlanes etc.) riding in mud and rain. The disc brakes are alot more efficient
in the mud than v-brakes (don't ask me the exact physics
).

my bike is a diamond back something which i had 12!!! years ago it has seen torturous abuse and stood the test of time.
not a recommendation, i just wanted to share my content

I think that discs were one of the best advances that push bikes have had in a long while! You don't notice it as much when of on-road, but when
your flying down hill, off-road, discs are a welcome relief from the occasional brown trouser moments from unexpected turns and ditches! Especially
hydralic discs, which are initally expensive but require very little maintainence.

BTW, I rode the Disc and non-disc models back to back.
Yes - you *can* lift the rear wheel easily with both, but the disc brakes were *so* much more progressive.
I think i'll go for the Specailized Hardrock Sport Disc!
Maybe upgrade to hydraulic discs later on
I've heard that mechanical discs can
be a nightmare to get setup properly on a bike forum.

Good choice!
Yeah good choice, but dont forget about ebay!!!
I got my hardtail jump bike from ebay last year. The guy was one of these with too much money and no riding skill who decided he 'needed'
full suspension and so went and spent 2.5K on bike porn. So along comes me and picks up his 'old' virtually unused hardtail for a song!
My 500 squid got me:
Bitchin 7005 frame, dirt jumper 3s, ultegra road mech (??), isis bb and cranks, DH chain device, trick stem, bars, wheels etc etc, and the best bit -
hope mini hydraulic disk brakes all round. Mmmmmmmmmmm.
About 1200 squid worth of bits that had probably spent more time in his bedroom than on a trail. Type jump bike or hardtail or something in ebay -
theres loads of bling on there!!
Liam
P.S. About the disk brakes - I'd never go back to rim brakes, and not even cable operated discs compare to the Hopes. It's the feel, the
control, the consistency, the power in the wet etc etc. Posing doesn't come into it - but you do look cool cycling to the shops
Mmmmmmmmm take a peek, be naughty

Woah them monos have come down in price a bit since they were introduced!
Need...another...eight...pistons......need...titanium...
[Slap]
No actually i dont. Until I'm a pro DH racer I think my 2-pot minis will be more than awesome enough
liam
Simple enough really, you'll just have to become a pro DH racer then Liam
Nah I value life too much to ever get anywhere near good enough!!
Nice slow jumping is fine for me. But I do like the little dual slalom next to the six-packs in my local woods when I want to go fast for a bit.
Mmmmmmm burms.
Ya know there's a nearly new specialised hardrock sport (non disc) and a front & rear set of hope minis on good old ebay right now... currenty £270 for the lot... if it were me...
