What do Locost builders listen to?
Metal Hippy™ - 24/2/03 at 03:51 AM

My personal song of the moment:

Stargazer by Rainbow.

Anyone else?

Rorty - 24/2/03 at 05:53 AM

Can I please have some of what ever it is that you've been on the last couple of days?

David Jenkins - 24/2/03 at 08:53 AM

Didn't you know - Hippy's avatar is an accurate portrait!

...and that's when he's in a fairly sane mood...

David

ChrisW - 24/2/03 at 03:14 PM

'Move your feet' - Junior Senior

BTW lol @ your sig David And a quick tip... If you specify the background colour as transparent on your avatar the grey bit will 'disappear'. Only works on .gif files though.

Metal Hippy™ - 24/2/03 at 03:15 PM

David Jenkins - 24/2/03 at 03:43 PM

OK... anything from the following:

Beethoven
Chopin
Led Zeppelin
BB King
Eric Clapton
Mozart
Shostakovich
Villa-Lobos
Dvorak
Schubert

+ whatever Radio 3 is playing while I'm in the garage (Jazz or classical)

OK, Hippy?

Metal Hippy™ - 24/2/03 at 03:47 PM

Sounds good to me.

I've got nowt against classical stuff.

Bit of a closet Mozart fan if I'm honest.

Might get hold of some once I have the funds to do so in fact..

kingr - 24/2/03 at 03:59 PM

Incubus (not the latest album)
Adema
Herbie Hancock
Arturo Sandoval
Jeff Buckley
Chris Cornell (+ sound garden + audioslave)
Counting Crows
Gang Starr
Jurassic 5 (again, not the latest album)

Anyway, you get the picture, pretty much anything.

James

stephen_gusterson - 24/2/03 at 11:33 PM

actually, my last post wasnt true.

I have Connect FM - a local kettering and corby station on that plays 70 - 90s music.

It saves getting cds covered in crap.

What IS true is that im going to a donny osmond concert next month with my wife. She feels embarrased about it as an ex fan - imagine how im lookign forward to it.

What will be interesting is to see if all those early 40's ladies can still scream 'donny' like they did in the 70s tv clips

as far as whats in my car at present,

Metal Hippy™ - 24/2/03 at 11:38 PM

Auzzie...

That ain't sad, you just listed half my cd collection.

The neighbours can think what they like when my music's blasting out...

auzziejim - 24/2/03 at 11:45 PM

hehe try telling my dad that he thinks im very sad! however Appetite for Destruction is the most commonly listened to CD and the neighbours tell me to turn it up when they are out in the garden.

Black sabbath
Iron Maiden
Nirvana
Deep Purple
Metalica
Smashing Pumpkins
AC/DC
Pearl Jam
Led Zepplin
Stone Roses

and much more of the same ilk. Anything from the Rainbow, Purple, Sabbath era is particularly good as that was the time, in my opinion, that rock/metal was at it's pinacle.

When I'm feeling chilled the odd bit of jazz or classical doesn't come amiss either.

I used to think that my musical tastes were a bit sad these days but it seems that I'm not the only one

And finally - when I'm not in the mood for music - Radio 4.

you think your musical tastes are sad! try going to school and having the same musical tastes - im a friggin outcast for liking quality music! what is wrong with the youth of today?

James

kingr - 25/2/03 at 02:04 PM

Auzziejim, You obviously go to the wrong school, at my school there was a reasonable sized group of people who liked quality music (admitedly, some bands on that list would have been laughed at a bit, but mostly not).

Stadium rock is pretty cheesy though, and guns and roses really should just let it go (although I seem to remember hearing lately that they'd almost definately never play another gig anyway). And as for Status Quo, well, three chord gets boring after about 10 minutes let alone 20 (or more?) years.

Black Sabbath is the mutts, I've usually got at least one CD in my car changer, if not two.

Kingr

[Edited on 25/2/03 by kingr]

David Jenkins - 25/2/03 at 02:07 PM

I creased up when I read that Status Quo's lead guitarist had RSI - he said that playing 3 chords for all these years had taken its toll!

At least he had the balls to own up...

kingr - 25/2/03 at 02:50 PM

I'd say RSI is a comparatively small price to pay for the money they must have in the bank.

I think they're still specifically banned from being played on radio 1.

kingr - 26/2/03 at 10:17 AM

Wadders - I think you've touched on the great north/south radio 1 divide. My theory (backed up by most people I have spoken to about it) is that Southerners like Chris Moyles and dislike Mark and Lard and Northerners like Mark and Lard and disklike Chris Moyles. I guess it's also partly true with Sara Cox and Jo Whiley, but don't most people find Sara Cox iritating anyway?

Kingr

So James, not only have you stolen my name but you got in there first with all the good music too!

Have to agree about Metallica- should never be missed off any list like this!

If this is Desert Island Discs am I allowed my worshop their too?

Cheers,

Just to be controversial, I'm adding one of my favourites: Marilyn Manson!

James ducks for cover...

auzziejim - 26/2/03 at 06:47 PM

James my sister is obsessed with Marilyn Manson and i cant stand him/her!!! please dont swear like that"

sounds like there is a group of REAL music fans forming here!

I am now well into counting crows but hav only got their stuff on my computer so now CD's to listen to in the garage!

I'm with James (the real one) on Marilyn Manson.

I like it.

Some of it anyway...

Rorty - 27/2/03 at 05:41 AM

I've been keeping quiet on this thread up until now, as I like so much stuff, I couldn't be ar$ed listing it all. I like everything mentioned so far, but band of the moment has to be Queens of the Stone Age. Judging by peoples tastes, I'm surprised I haven't seen System Of A Down. Top stuff.
I had to arc up when I read David jenkins likes Horslips! I don't know anyone else who's even heard of them. Horslips album "The Tain".....brilliant.

Now hold on there, boy... I say, jus' hold on there, son!

I said "...all but a few..." - I've HEARD OF Horslips, but I ain't HEARD them - so I can't give an opinion.

But, saying that, I'll listen to most things done with respect to the audience, performed by musicians.

regards,

David

(BTW, Rorty - I still think your sig is the best around at the moment!)

kingr - 27/2/03 at 11:29 AM

Counting Crows are great, but their first album (August and everything after) was the best. I'm not desperately keen on recovering the satelite or this desert life. Hard candy is pretty good, I was listening to it this morning in my car.

Another couple of bands that I don't recall coming up is Deftones and Tool.

Thank you that man Hippy! Keep the pretender suppressed!

When it comes to Mr Manson I'm not so keen on the older stuff but Mechanical Animals primarily and then Holy Wood I think are great.

What did you think of the remix of Tainted Love?

I saw both Marilyn Manson and Metallica live at Big Day out a couple of years ago- I thought MM was a bit of a tit actually but Metallica ROCKED!

Rock On!

James

Metal Hippy™ - 27/2/03 at 01:14 PM

Marilyn's a complete tit, you're not wrong.

As for System Of A Down I saw them back in 1999 when they were one of the support acts for Black Sabbath and it has to be said they were talentless piles of crap.

I much prefered the first of the 3 support acts... All girl Swedish band. Highlight of that set? The lead guitarist walking backwards and falling over some stage equipment. Genius.

Mind you the bass player was nice..... (Of the Swedish band, not Geezer Butler...)

(it needed 3 other bands because they needed to acclimatise your ears for Sabbath as well as possible before they came on and deafened you with fantasticness....)

James - 27/2/03 at 01:56 PM

Actually I don't mind the man himself, interviews I heard or read with him he's always come across as intelligent and sensible. He knows full well it's all an act to get money out of dumb American kids trying to shock their parents.
I don't know if anyone's seen Gunning for Columbine the Michael Moore documentary movie that was at the cinema recently? It has an interview with MM talking about how he was blamed for the Columbine shootings- meant to be pretty interesting.

Anyway, the thing I didn't like about the live act was what was going on on stage; the music was very cool but there is no-one in the enitre world who looks cool when they pull the trousers down to their ankles and then waddle (I stress waddle as there's no other way to walk with tight leather trousers round your ankles) across the stage with their dick out- it's just sad!

Anyway, was that Ozzfest where you saw Sabbath? Coz I'm pretty sure it was 1999 when I was there too. Have no idea who played (other than Pantera who were brilliant).

Ahh, happy days!

James

Liam - 28/2/03 at 02:04 AM

Well I could list what i listen to, but you old rockers wont have heard of most of it.

Having said that, when I need to grind harder, cut faster and hammer more violently there's nothing like a bit of honest German-heavy-electro-metal, so Rammstein are never too far away from the garage stereo. or:

Nirvana
Rage Against The Machine
Kyuss
Audioslave
Prodigy
Boom Boom Satellites...

For normal happy tinkering:

Radiohead
Death in Vegas
Chemical Brothers
Lamb
Archive
Ladytron
Feelix Da Housecat
REM
Beta Band
Doves...i could go on forever so i'll stop...

And when I'm in contemplative mood trying to engineer around the latest 'how the hell will that fit' problem (or I've just fu**ed something up/injured myself and need soothing)...

Beth Gibbons
Mazzy Star
Goldfrapp
Portishead
Air
Dot Allison...

OK that'll do. Oh and if I'm in the garage late enough - John Peel on Radio 1. All very nice.

Liam

Add another Horslips fan to the list. Other stuff apart from whats already down are Thin Lizzy and Queen - I was surprised noone else has them down already (not as far as I can see) .

This is my first post by the way so I may introduce myself - I'm Mark from Ireland - and I hope to build some form of kit once the summer comes - am quite impressed with Luego so far.

I also must say that this forum has been extremely helpful with my research so far, and you seem like a very nice bunch listening to a god selection of music!

I listen to:-

The whine of the angle grinder.

The clunk of the big hammer.

The wife complaining.

The thud of the neighbours throwing rotten fruit at the garage.

My screams of agony

The sirens of the emergency services.
(if you listen carfully you can tell the difference between the fire engine and the ambulance)

So, did anybody go to Reading then?

Seems there are a few Metallica fans here- at Reading they rocked long and hard!
Two hours of fantastic music, fireworks and flashbangs!
Only disappointment being they didn't play The Unforgiven (probably my favourite Metallica track).

Guess PHULL would have liked System of a Down who played just before too.

Cheers,

That is pretty shocking how much good taste is out there... couldnt agree more with nearly all of you, except the junglist. Sorry, i hate jungle and D&B. really hate, maybe ok in a club, but not on a sunday afternoon. my prat of a neighbour is mad for it and got a bass tube, 2 decks and a computer to shimmy it all up with....

BAD NEWS.

anyone heard of Yngwie Malmsteen? Hes done some pretty cool tunes if you like the style, which he calls 'neo-classical rock'. Good stuff...!

Metal Hippy - 29/8/03 at 06:29 PM

Valley of Kings..... Pyramid Of Cheops.....

I know him...

JoelP - 29/8/03 at 10:25 PM

's funny how thru all the years, though the style has changed loads, there are mint tunes on every album.

Black star, i am a viking, you dont remember, how many miles to babylon, tommorows gone, i'm my own enemy.

I downloaded every single tune he ever released, but unfortunately dont have any speakers or CDRs! That is actually beginning to bug me!

Wasn't it kind of pointless downloading them then...?

JoelP - 30/8/03 at 01:40 AM

Actually, i need a new mouse as well, and a key board. Theres a key missing, but i dont know what it was and so i suppose a mouse alone will do....

Keyboards are under a fiver, mice are £3, cheap speakers under a tenner, CDR's about 40p each in cases or about 2p each in a cakebox(£21 a 100), don't torture yourself spend some money and listen to your music

yours, Pete.

D Beddows - 31/8/03 at 06:28 PM

What you all need is a TV in the workshop............there's this great reality TV show set in a playgroup where they all sing and dance for a bit then play with this dog called Doodles, then Max (one of the adult helpers) tells tells them a story or goes off to see how candles are made or something....... top stuff when you're bonding pannels to the chassis/ have been welding for a while man........

I'm also now an expert on 'Diagnosis Murder'/ 'Neighbours'/ 'Charlies Angels' etc but think it's about time 'The Dukes of Hazzard' was repeated on daytime TV

Current in-car listening......

Ian Dury
The Darkness
Catatonia
Van Halen
Fun Lovin' Criminals
Happy Mondays
Wolfsbane

Cheers

Dave

PS. re TV - when everything has just gone pearshaped 'Cavegirl' makes you feel a whole lot lot better.........

JoelP - 31/8/03 at 08:07 PM

[Edited on 31/8/03 by JoelP]

Mark H - 1/9/03 at 09:25 AM

I make my little boy watch it with me (can justify watching it as some "quality family time" - similiar to Simpsons or Tekeshi's castle!)

ceebmoj - 1/9/03 at 09:47 AM

Hi if you are looking for a set of speaker get your self to richer sounds buy an amp and a set of speakers it will blow away any pc speaker I have seen and cost the same as well (30 to 40 for a set up that will destroy most pc speaker systems that will cost you lots more). I recently did this my self and you will be amassed by the difference.

My farrot music at the moment is

Delerium
Orbital
PVD (and other DJ mixes)

Good show. I reckon "Stand Up" is their best album (1969)

Cheers,

Neil.

Was it any good?

Cheers,

James

nicklondon - 8/6/04 at 05:21 PM

my son went, Lars is ill so Joey Jordison (Slipknot), Dave Lombardo(Slayer), Flemming(Lars' drum tech) took the seat drumming. They had to shorten their set to about 11 songs because everything was running late, they still played well though.

James - 9/6/04 at 10:08 AM

Metallica- truly the greatest!

There was even a 30minute programme on BBC World Service at 1.30am about them Monday night.
Candid interviews with the whole band loads of tunes etc. etc. not bad for the World Service!

James

mackie - 9/6/04 at 10:18 AM

I was there. All seemed a bit suss to me, especially after Slayer failed to make the main stage and had to play at the Barfly tent because of "transport problems"
But then I'm cynical since it was such a badly organised event.

Anyone remember the real Donnington festival.....Monsters or Rock.
See the biggest name bands in the world on the same bill for about £25. Camp next to your car/bike (not 2 miles from it) have huge fires and take your own beer into the circuit.
Oh happy days...

John

Drowning Pool (rip Dave Williams)
