Whats the average job that people have?
trogdor - 16/5/06 at 04:09 PM

continuing the theme of peoples personal details i thought i would ask what people did for a living as i am interested what people do with their time.

i am a student at southampton university studying oceanography, so donn't have a living yet!

wonder what the strangest job will be?

ditchlewis - 16/5/06 at 04:17 PM

Hi

I'm the planning manager for a large property development company. I time manage all the preconstruction activities such a site procurement planning permissions, design and finally the construction of projects up to £450,000,000 over time periods of upto 30years.

plan for a living, but cannot plan my own life for toffee...

I'm just seeing how far i can go on my HND certificate in building studies. Must be the biggest bulls****r around i guess.

muzchap - 16/5/06 at 04:24 PM

Won't say what job I do though

Lawnmower - 16/5/06 at 04:25 PM

I am a Geoenvironental Engineer. Basicly I dig holes (or have someone dig or drill them for me, and then fill them back in.

Looking for a career change....

Run my own safety inspection business. Carry out Gas and Electrical safety inspection in residential properties for letting agents, property management companies, landlords, homeowners and surveyors.
Hopeful the forthcoming Home Inspection Pack will generate lots of new business.

Got to care about work to hate it. Now if I could get a job with Williams, Mclaren, Ferrari - dream dream dream

Aboardman - 16/5/06 at 04:54 PM

I work in Architects as a technician; also do fabrication and 3d drawings for large span portal frame conservatory as a side line. personal mechanic to my godsons moped and car restorer for his mini.

john_p_b - 16/5/06 at 04:56 PM

light and sometimes heavy commercial mechanic. musta done something bad in a former life to go down this career path.

hector - 16/5/06 at 04:59 PM

I am a mere peasant of a window fitter, it sucks, but need to fund me toys!

Lawnmower - 16/5/06 at 04:59 PM

I do care about what I do, love been outdoors on site, its more all the work place/office politics that i hate. Plus the firm that i want to work for that is based 2 miles from my house wont offer me job, and instead I have to do a 50+mile each way commute every day to a humdrum office.

Good job i'm not bitter.

watsonpj - 16/5/06 at 05:10 PM

Was a Mechanical Engineer now a System Engineer so spend my days integrating/deugging/specing electro/mechanical/software stuff. Its nice to get in the garage a just make stuff.

Airline Pilot...(MUCH MUCH better than working for a living
(used to be a telecoms engineer!)

greggors84 - 16/5/06 at 05:38 PM

Studying Automotive Engineering at Oxford Brookes. Have learnt more about cars by building one, than at uni. Its just advanced maths and physics with a automotive twist really.

Problem is even if i do get into motorsport the money is rubbish and the hours are very long. I was at Nissan last year on my placement and they offered my a job on my graduation, not the most exciting work, but its 8-5 and after 3 years its about 10k more than my mate will be getting at RedBull Racing.

God, what has happened to me! I used to value job satisfaction so highly!

I also work part time at David LLoyd Gym (maybe thats where the job satisfaction hope died!)

NigeEss - 17/5/06 at 12:27 AM

14 years as a bored quality controller ( stuck it as the engineering workshop was superb),
Made redundant and took my LGV1, hated every minute of it.
Sacked it and now working for myself fixing cars'n houses. No more getting up at daft 'o'clock
and working 50 odd hours a week, well happy

So why is the build not progressing any better ??????????????????

TheGecko - 17/5/06 at 12:58 AM

Analyst/Programmer for a University

I specialise in Corporate Data Integration - basically writing interface programs that shuffle and split/merge data between systems. Currently team leading a project to develop our new access provisioning system - creates computer accounts and electronic door accesses in near real time as staff and students flow in and out of the various sytems. Interesting stuff but runs into more political problems than technical ones

Through most of the 80's I was a computer technician on Macintoshes and PC's. Don't miss that at all

Fred W B - 17/5/06 at 11:04 AM

I am a mechanical engineer. I work at management level for a company (www.oddy.co.za) that manufactures bulk liquid transport equipment (20 foot tank containers and swap tanks) out of stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminium and fibreglass. We make about 5000 of these a year.

Started here as a trainee (in 1984) in the drawing office. I was lucky that in an effort to learn the product and market, my MD sent me to work with some of our customers and suppliers in various parts of the world for most of the period 1991 to 1996. I am now part of "Marketing" but I am still very involved in the technical side, interpreting the customers needs, and making sure what we build is actually what the customer wants. I work out and issue quotes and specs, book jobs (over 100 per year) into the factory and do customer servicing.

Cheers

Seriously - fire officer - now head of service delivery (operations) for our 'Brigade'. Started at the bottom of the ladder (excuse the pun) and taken every opportunity thrown at me - loved nearly every minute apart from the really scary or really horrible bits. Got an honours degree in Maths and IT along the way somehow.

Confused but excited. - 20/5/06 at 12:17 AM

Started off as an Instrument Artificer but a car smash gave me partial amnesia, resulting in qualifications with the value of toilet paper. Since then I have been; a Bouncer, Property investment broker, Security consultant, Armourer, Production worker, Technical manager, Production manager, had my own Electronics company, then retired after a massive heart attack, followed by a triple by-pass and a busted ulcer.
Currently enjoying life and hitting lumps of metal with hammers. They may just turn into a car.

jollygreengiant - 20/5/06 at 09:32 AM

Ok, started off as,

Student,

Pilot,

Car parts sales man (accesory shop), and engine builder

Diving Equipment seller,

Under water salvage (2 weeks diving on Mary Rose),

Professional Driver,

Light mechanical Engineer and City & Guilds examiner (whilst gaining paper work for City & Guilds motor vehicle technician),

Mechanic (gynaecology mostly - working with a load of c***s), MOT tester

Biological, chemical engineer with a remit in time and personel management, on going job (read husband and Father of 2)

Current job has to be the best in the world. I go out and pick up young women, I take them home and they even pay me for the pleasure of it. Even better is that the wife actively encourages me to do it. So any one like to hazard a guess?
The correct answer will appear here shortly. Taxi Driver

Enjoy

akumabito - 15/10/06 at 04:53 PM

Full-time student, mostly leeching off my parents and the government.
IT SUCKS! I WANT TO WORK!
I need some money to go buy my own stuff!

The shite is that the way the minimum wage system is set up here in Holland, the minimum wage increases every year until you are 24. Now, this works brilliantly to keep kids in school longer, but it sucks for us poor students. After all, why would any shop hire us if they can hire a 16 year old for 1/3 the money? And I can not get a 'real' job until I finish uni!

clbarclay - 15/10/06 at 06:56 PM

Currently student at Harper Adams, doing Meng. in off-road vehicle design. Currently playing with two Range Rovers so 1/2 built Locost has taken a back seat. When not at college working for Dad, farmer, 500 acres arable. Good workshop, tools, etc.

snapper - 15/10/06 at 07:07 PM

Snapper, bit of a clue..... Photographer, working for .The Govenment. so a Civil Servant really. The job has taken me all over the world but mostly the nasty bits, i have been in most things that fly, float, or travel over rough ground, can't belive my luck really, quite good for a poorly educated eastend kid from the 50's

hillbillyracer - 15/10/06 at 09:53 PM

Agricultural, automotive & fabrication engineer. If its something that a farmer uses, sooner or later I will have to fix or make it.
Went there on work experience & started the day after I finished my GCSEs, never even had an interview.
Pay is nowt special, conditions can be terrible & the hours long but its a brilliant job. Skills should come in useful if I ever get round to building a car!

I used to work in Cornwall for my Grandfathers agricultural engineering business. Driving out to remote farms on hot summer days to do a service on a tractor etc. was great. Going out to replace a failed bearing on a half-full muck spreader was less pleasant...
