WHAT??? strange, very strange!

Jon Ison - 20/9/06 at 07:52 PM

Sorted, I had same problem.

smart51 - 20/9/06 at 07:53 PM

This is a corrected link.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/5365676.stm

quote from the BBC:

Top Gear presenter hurt in crash
Richard Hammond
The presenter was reportedly testing a jet-powered car
Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme.

The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to a Leeds hospital which has a special neurological unit.

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene but was regaining consciousness at the hospital.

A BBC spokesman confirmed the presenter had been injured during a shoot.

oooh crumbs, hope he's gonna be ok.

gazza285 - 20/9/06 at 07:57 PM

I get it fine. Hope he's ok, I quite like his presenting on both Top Gear and Brainiac.

MkIndy7 - 20/9/06 at 08:01 PM

Somebodys got2 post it:

Hope his Teeth are OK!

Joking aside lets hope he's alright and recovers fully.

Fozzie - 20/9/06 at 08:02 PM

Yup Jons fixed the link now!

Hope that hes going to be OK

Fozzie

shades - 20/9/06 at 09:06 PM

doesn't sound good. Hope he's OK. BBC news clip reported that two BBC staff saw him walk to the helicopter.

stephen_gusterson - 20/9/06 at 09:08 PM

and the same news clip said that a man was reported trapped in an overturned car. Its not that likely that walking wounded get picked up by helecopter.....

really hope hes ok - seems a genuine nice guy and has two very young daughters.

bigrich - 20/9/06 at 09:12 PM

just watched the bbc report, still critical hope the little guy will be ok

JackNco - 20/9/06 at 09:16 PM

hope hes ok. great presenter, 2 young 2 end hsis career. if not though, what a way 2 go

John

Peteff - 20/9/06 at 09:17 PM

I suspect he suffered head injuries as they mention he was taken to a hospital with special neurological unit. Best wishes to him, been watching him since Men and Motors Kits and Cruising days and what he lacks in finesse he makes up for in enthusiasm.

matt.c - 20/9/06 at 09:18 PM

Hope he is ok?

coozer - 20/9/06 at 09:32 PM

All the links worked for me.

Sad to see as he was interestingly watchable for some reason.

Lets all keep our fingers crossed he makes a full recovery.

JC - 20/9/06 at 09:41 PM

Thoughts are with his Wife and Kids. Hope he makes a full recovery

stevec - 20/9/06 at 09:43 PM

I really hope and pray the guy is ok,
I also cant help thinking that the way Top Gear has been going recently that it was only a matter of time before one of them got hurt.
Remember the Noel Edmunds show just getting more and more dangerous week by week?
Good luck Hammy,
Steve.

DIY Si - 20/9/06 at 09:48 PM

Hope all is well, and thoughts go to his wife and daughters.
As said, if you play silly buggers for long enough something had to go wrong, although the bbc aren't exactley known for hurting people.

Guinness - 20/9/06 at 10:19 PM

Hope he is OK!

As stated, some of the stunts have been getting a bit more dangerous of late.

The star in a reasonably priced car, IIRC didn't have a roll cage when they started, but when Gambon nearly rolled it they reacted and fitted one pronto.

Hammond nearly had a moment in the Van test, where he got the little Bedford Rascal close to going over. It didn't have a roll cage either.

Hope that he is OK, but that there Health & Safety guy gets a wake up call. They seem to react to events, rather than do a risk assessment first.

Saying that, the stunts make the show what it is and I hope they keep going with them. It would be a shame to go back to the bad old days.

JamJah - 20/9/06 at 10:37 PM

Sky and beeb reporting as stable.
As mentioned many inconsistancies. I've worked with several ex beeb H+S officers and I am sure their risk assesments are more than sufficant. I was suprised to see that the vampire didnt have a cage. Especially as it it did roll the head wouldnt be covered entirely by the air intake if front of the car or intake were damaged.

Feeling really uneasy, but if hes stable means he is not getting any worse. Lots of water to go under the bridge yet though.

Take care hamster.

stephen_gusterson - 21/9/06 at 12:02 AM

the picture shows a cage over the driver....

the guy has balls to get in that! cage or not

head injuries can cause a build up of pressure on the brain... so stable now doesnt really mean hes out of the woods.

this would be a huge tragedy if he doesnt make it.

He was complaining of pain in his lower back when he did come round a bit, im not sure but i guess thats good, well as aposed to i cant feel my legs... really hope hes ok.

to ne honest if hes stable he SHOULD be ok, although if there is any brain damage will be unknow

A friend of mins brother got knocked off a bike by a car, there was no aparent damage when he was out the hospital, unless u knew him n he was and is deffinatly a bit slower than he was.... just hope this isnt the case...

Not a religiouse man but my thoughs are with him and his family

MkIndy7 - 21/9/06 at 12:18 AM

I was driveing back from York to Leeds (on the A64) about 4:45 and there was some strange cross winds and that was only driveing a Kangoo!

They caught the van a few times yet when you looked at the bushes etc they didn't look to be moving much, more like sudden gusts at random, maybe 1 of these caught them out.

tks - 21/9/06 at 06:35 AM

yesterday overhere it was also more windy than usual!!

albeit a later as over the pond..

its sad to be injured and now walk a risk with your body.

i see this like bull fighting you now what the risks are and that you can die, left without testicles, eyes etc. etc.

saying that i wish him and his family the best!

Tks

Coose - 21/9/06 at 07:44 AM

I live half an hour north east of Elvington and it was waaaaaaaaaay too windy to be trying anything like that yesterday. I've done a lot of twisty sprints there, and if it's ever windy anywhere it'll be at Elvington!

He's one of those people who I don't want to like, but you can't help it!
Hope he pulls through ok....

DaveFJ - 21/9/06 at 08:16 AM

It was a properly controlled attempt at the UK land speed record with experienced personnell attending and all the neccessary precautions.
I am sure that if the conditions were against them they would have called it off and definately not called for asnother run just for the camera! It has been reported that he had already beaten 300mph!

At the end of the day it is a very dangerous pursuit and he accepted the risks when he got in the car. I admire him for that and I am sure he wouldn't want loads of people demanding the end of Top Gear or the 'stunts' they perform. Regardless of the final outcome of this story I hope they show the peice in the next series (albeit without the crash).

Anyway, my family's thoughts are with him and his wife and children, Get well soon Hammy

Coose - 21/9/06 at 08:30 AM

As MKIndy7 said it was very gusty yesterday, to the extent that it nearly blew my dog over! Not the weather to be trying such an attempt at Elvington, believe me! If you haven't been it's as bleak as an airfield gets, and very prone to wind.

Again, I hope he pulls through and carries one....

marktigere1 - 21/9/06 at 08:46 AM

Wish him all the best.

thoughts with him and his family.

woodster - 21/9/06 at 09:06 AM

get well soon hamster

JamJah - 21/9/06 at 09:35 AM

Only personalised plates... maybe they realised and withdrawn ads or changed them.... or am i missing something?

At the end of the day driving above 50 you expect injuries (albeit short term), 100 more evidently, 150 well need I go on.
Yes, the faster a car is designed for, the better the designed protection but as I found out your body doesn’t like jolts and as I know all too well coccyx and sacrum are extreme venerable. I imagine in a rolling dragster your coccyx is going to get a hammering lets just hope he can get driving quicker than me.

[edit] dontforget neurosurgery is far greater than heads. covers somuch but simply nerves and reflexes too.

very sad i hope he is ok.

reading the paper this morning it said he owns a number of kit cars does anybody know which ones?

Cheffy - 21/9/06 at 11:23 AM

My son did some recording with Richard a few months ago for the new series of Brainiac. He said it was great fun and made enjoyable largely due to Richard's friendly attitude. My son was only an extra and Richard wouldn't have known him from Adam, but my son said they were laughing and joking together and Richard even took his turn making the tea!

Thoroughly decent bloke!

Get well soon Richard and best wishes to you and your family.

Martin.

If you go to the top gear web site you can send in a get well soon e-mail
I also remember him from his sky days i can remember saying to the wife how beleiveable, honest and good a presenter he is,next thing i know he,s on topgear.
get well soon hamster.

iank - 21/9/06 at 12:52 PM

Just seen the picture of the wreck on the bbc frontpage. It's all in one piece so it looks like it must have been well sub 300 mph when it wiped out, not that he's out of the woods yet, but that's certainly a very good thing.

Let's hope he recovers quickly!

oliwb - 21/9/06 at 02:20 PM

Get well soon hopefully! I like him on Topgear...would be a real shame to lose another petrol head from British TV - they seem to be in short supply now days! Oli.

JamJah - 21/9/06 at 03:08 PM

Ive heard the air intake came off and shattered as it rolled and that the roll cage and richards head had dug into the ground several times.
From a reliable source too.

Good for them!

Better than sending bunches of flowers that just annoy the hospital staff...

Jasper - 21/9/06 at 03:32 PM

A friend and a friend runs that web site - he charges the charities 2% fee to collect it - and lives very happily down in St. Tropez. A very good simple idea - good for the charities and good for him

scotty g - 21/9/06 at 05:12 PM

My wife hopes he will be ok too as she fancies him. She says she would like him to father her next child
I can spend more time in the Garage

Guiness,
Could you persuade yourmate to put the £400 he has made in the last 7 hours in... Hed still make the £8 on his donation!

An air ambluance is a worthy cause at the best of times.

Guinness - 22/9/06 at 06:26 AM

£27k and counting.

JamJar, I think it's a mate of Jaspers that owns / runs it. NTDWM!

Cheers

Mike

JamJah - 22/9/06 at 07:26 AM

Apolgies to Mike.

*Methaphorically Prods Jasper*

Jasper - 22/9/06 at 09:25 AM

It's not a mate of mine, it's a friend of a friend of my parents.

And there is no chance of him donating the extra cash. This is his business, like any business that deals with charities. He's actually making far less than most people collecting for charities. If you put your £1 in a charity box, do you think it all goes to the charity? How about the companies that make the TV ads for charities, do you think they do it for free? How about the newspapers and TV companies that run charity ads, you think they do it for free. And how about the people who work full time for charities, you think they work for nothing?

Charities are a business just like any other .... better get used to it

nick205 - 22/9/06 at 09:27 AM

All good wishes to Hamster and family - I've always liked his presenting work.

Met him a few years ago when he spoke at a trade seminar. Only spoke to him for few moments, very friendly and enthusiatic.

Lawnmower - 22/9/06 at 09:55 AM

Hope he makes it. Read an article about him in a landrover mag, seems like a top bloke - btw he has an old series 1.

----

Digressing slightly, my inlaws were in a car crash a few years ago during the fireman strikes, they got airlifted to hospital, and are fine now. Seems daft that the air ambulances are charities. Dont mind paying my taxes for that.

ned - 22/9/06 at 12:08 PM

reading through the comments on the TG website this one hits the spot:

An Ode to Hammond:
There once was a midget called Hamster
Who liked nothing better than to go faster
With his shiny white teeth and Top Gear dog
Get well soon mate, we think you're a god!

Guinness - 22/9/06 at 12:22 PM

Sounds like he's improving:-

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/5369512.stm

"Top Gear's Richard Hammond is out of intensive care and is making "satisfactory progress", doctors say"

and

"This morning he has been moved from intensive care on to a high dependency unit."

"His condition has been downgraded from 'serious but stable' to 'stable'."

"He (Clarkson) also said the presenter had no visible injuries following the ordeal he had been through other than a black eye."

Here's hoping!

Mike

It's reasonable to assume that he has massive concussion injuries from rattling round in the rollcage, & hitting the ground.

Basically, no doctor will give a straight answer on the extent or effect of such a brain injury, as only time (at least a week) will tell if it will get better or worse.
(summary of what I've found on a couple of medical websites this morning).

David

Jon Ison - 22/9/06 at 12:29 PM

I particularly like this quote from Mr Clarkson.............
Jeremy Clarkson is reported to have said, after a visit to Hammond's bedside: "He was lying peacefully with a black eye but didn't react so I tried something else. I said, 'The reason you're here is because you're a crap driver'. He then smiled at me. It was an amazing moment, very moving."

Here's too a full and speedy recovery.

iank - 22/9/06 at 01:55 PM

Excellent news!

He's been moved out of the ICU according to the beeb, and his condition downgraded to 'stable' from 'serious but stable'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/5369512.stm

iank - 22/9/06 at 04:22 PM

He's holding conversations now.

"Mr May said it was not a long talk "but it was a conversation".

"I'm not a doctor but I am his mate and I believe that deep inside the Hammond I know is perfectly intact," he said."

Peteff - 22/9/06 at 05:12 PM

That's an upgrade in my book. It's a pity James May wasn't driving it, it wouldn't have overturned at 30mph
