TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE COUNTY SHERIFF (ARIZONA) AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN
These are some of the reasons why:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the "tent city jail" to save Arizona from spending tens of million of dollars on another expensive prison
complex.
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them
He banned smoking and porno magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but "G" movies. He says:
"they're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave
He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money.
Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.
He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only
allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.
When asked why the weather channel he replied: "so these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain
gangs."
He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them,
"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a
Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why
95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000
inmates living in a barbed- wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their
government-issued pink boxer shorts
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees. "This is hell. It
feels like we live in a furnace," said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. "Criminals should be punished for their
crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money
and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves."
Wednesday he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: "It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers
are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes,
so shut your damned mouths!"
If all prisons were like this there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces.'
rock on.
about time somebody with sense
I wonder how many return for a second go
And HERE'S a link to the Amnesty International report on the
ill-treatment of inmates in Maricopa County jails, Arizona.
Just in the interests of 2 sides of the story!
It sounds good, but he's a republican after all!!
Perhaps not quite that extreme buy why on earth cant this nancy govermnment of hours see some sence in that!!!
Deffinately remove cable TV...make them earn their dinner, dont give them porn, take away their playstations.....
Under no circumstances should their living conditions be better than a non criminal who is working and paying taxes!!!!!!!
amen brotha!
I would be interested to know if the re-offend rate is any less than ours.... otherwise, what's the point!
Thankyou Alister for trying to put a bit of balance!
Cheers,
James
"the introduction of chain gangs appears to serve no legitimate penological purpose, other than as a punishment and to demonstrate to the public
a "get tough" policy toward offenders"
Surely the point of prision is to be punished. I think that Amnesty Internation are too hung up on thinking that all prisoners can be rehabilitated!
If it does lower the re offend rate, then you would think it would lower ours too, regardless wether they have a higher or lower rate than ours.
The less criminals walking about the better!

Clearly, I appreciate that if people are locked up then they're not commiting crimes!
But unless we give everyone inside a life sentence we've gotta let them out at some point. And therefore re-offending rates are important.
What I meant was, does a higher or lower re-offend rate come as a result of tougher, or more lenient treatment in prison?
Our re-offend rate is about 60%
In Europe, I believe that prisoners are treated better than in the UK. But in Europe they have a lower re-offend rate!
By that logic, America has a worse re-offend rate. But is that actually the case? I'm sure I could find it with web searching.... but I
can't be arsed right now!
Cheers,
James

Huntley has a cell about the size of my house, so do numerous others.
They have a roof over their heads, decent food, gym facilities, tv and video gaming. They don't work.
My suggestions would be a 10 by 10 cell with 5 or 6 inmates in each. Beds and floors from concrete, no glass or heating, just bars. No toys. Just
boredom for 23 hours a day.
The US warders managed to get food down to 40c a day. I'd aim to get their daily keep to 40p a day. Plenty of better places for the money to
go.
Instead of abso's which seem to be something little shites seem to be proud of, stick them in stocks for a week. NO letoff for food, peeing or
the other. They won't want to go back.
People caught on scene with firearms (head)shot on sight.
I saw a bloke with a t shirt on that had a comment from a prison warder in the states that said they get food, a roof over their heads and something
else (which has escaped my mind) everythig else was a privilege.
I don't doubt that some of the work amnesty does is good, but criticising that prison is just plain liberal namby pamby nonsense.

I know what your saying James, what I meant by criminals on the street is ones who have been rehabilitated, unfair to call them criminals once they
have gone straight!
What I was trying to get at is if the harsher treatment does bring the reoffend rate down it will mean less of the people getting out of jail will be
on our streets commiting crimes again.
Like you said without figures you cannot really tell, I dont think any of those articles gave any figures did they?
"but criticising that prison is just plain liberal namby pamby nonsense"
Highlighting more than a dozen instances of excessive force, including deaths is liberal namby pamby nonsense?
Kill 'em all and let God decide eh?
Prison serves 4 purposes. Deterant, Punishment, Keeping offenders off the street and rehabilitation.
Less pleasant prisons may be more of a deterant but are probably low on rehabilitation. If a month seems like a lifetime when locked up, I'd
think that several years would be a lot of punishment.
I agree that prisons don't seem so bad these days but is that just perception? I imagine that there is a branch of social science that shows
that different levels of "harshness" in prison has different affects on behaviour, prioner attitueds to crime and reoffending rates. Just
'cos this american guy is popular for being hard, doesn't mean he's getting the best effect on crime.
if you could get it down to 40p a day, you could afford to keep them in longer!
Anyway we're missing the point, in the UK we dotn have enough prison places full stop so there is less fear of punishment among criminals. Once
we have an extra 10000 places, we can worry about conditions.

we all "PUB TALK " about stuff like this and how it would be great if there was something like this
but if a bloke suddenly said well come on then vote for me and ill sort your crime out. NO ONE would vote wed all make promises that we were going to
etc but when push comes to shove Human beings are the worst for worming out, we yap on behind closed doors "OF WHAT WE'D DO!"
you only have to look at the copper in Middlesborough his name is Ray "Robocop" Mallon
ho sorted all the scum bags and drug dealers out in his area..
in an Omega he was chasing a poo head on a BMX who had just battered some old person for about Ģ3.50 BANG!! He knocked him clean off
The bloke was mayor? but he had a right job getting there anyone under 35 who he made the streets safe for aswell were to busy watching Eastenders
etc
so he had to rely on the over 60's who thought he was GOD to vote
Sorry theres no chance of anything like this happening now in this country
chris
I'm all for tougher prisons, once we have a 100% honest police force.
Sheriff NO Bullsh$T
If you want to get far in life youve got to upset people this chaps as cold as ice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0oqik88NYk
If we had elected law enforcement officers do you not think the public would want to know about the persons policies before electing? The American
Sheriff is an extreme example granted, but the public keep re -electing him, so they think his policies are good.
Now I am all for re habilitation, but lets be honest some can never be rehabilitated, they are career criminals who take prision as an occupational
habit.
I know a man who was birched for his part in an assault ( the birch for those younger than me is a flogging devise designed to inflicte pain and was
legal in the 50's and 60's) this guy never did anything wrong ever again. The same crime today is not treated seriously at all and is likly
to get a suspended sentance.
Ray Mallon was too sucessful, there were to many bent coppers, bent councillor officalls all whom would rather the status qou been maintained. Ask
decent people in his area to them he was a hero, yet the establishment was hell bent on destroying him and his methods. Liberalisum has meant a copper
cannot do his or her job without fear of a scrote claiming some form of harrasment, injury etc.
Until we as a socoiety are prepared to punish first, rehabilitate second and accept that life means life for murder and other seroius crimes like
kiddie fiddlers we will see a slow downward spiral into even worse.

i like tight prisions
because daily we all do what we are teached to do and we in some way obey the law. when we donīt we know the risks for getting cought.
I still have to say that that person isnīt 100% the way he talks isnīt like i think it should be. Anyway that journalist almost shits his untherwear
and that works AGAINTS sir Joe
Tks
Its funny how blackpool is now struggling for business, while the prisons are overcrowded. Perhaps if they made the prisons less appealing than blackpool the figures might swap.
It's funny how your all arguing the pro's and cons of this, when the evidence of public opinion is stated in the first post.

Maybe we should ask former prisoners what they think?
It's amazing I'd never heard of this till it was posted here.
I'm all for him, but I'm betting he won't last long.
If there's no punishment then why not do the time? For many of these guys in prison, prison life is better than life on the dole outside of
prison.
They're in with their buddies, they don't have to worry about clothes, work, food, TV or anything. As others have said, until prison life
is an actual punishment and is worse than living out in the "free" world then it's not really accomplishing much.
Outside they have to worry about the cable, power, water & food being cut off for non-payment.
I'm not a great rehabilitation fan, because I don't see that it will work on most - or at least by the time they've gotten to prison
vs. the local jails. I grew up with many of the guys who are in prison and it's a mindset and they way they've been brought up. They have
no intention of ever going straight, it's simply not how they think. They have been brought up learning how to work the system.
