new car for the GF
graememk - 12/5/07 at 10:56 AM

looking for a better car for swmbo, about 2 years old, must be big enough for the dog who normally comes to work with me and sits in the front footwell and maybe a pram, must also be a bit quirky and different..

MINI not big enough
Beetle to much money as she dosnt look after her car
so what do we think about a PT Cruiser, are they ok reliable etc ? they look quite cheep.

Mate, seriously - they are terrible!

nick205 - 12/5/07 at 11:15 AM

Would she settle for a Transit Connect?

Plenty of room for the dog and handy tie down points in the back for a pram too

Great for carting car parts around in too

"looking for a better car for swmbo, about 2 years old"

Paedophile!

Seriously touch a PT Bruiser at your peril, the parts are beyond insanity, unavailable and required frequently, a door mirror fitted is over 600 quid!

Subaru forester!!

227 BHP 4x4 0-60 in 5.7 secs. Large enough to carry all you might need.

Guess how I know?

My kids call PT Cruisers coffin cars 'cos they remind them of hearses...

What about a 5 door Impreza? The "challenging looks" have kept the prices reasonable.

Always remind me of the Ant Hill Mob's Bulletproof Bomb

Pity they are so bad and so expensive.

We looked at Mini's and Beetles 2 years ago and bought a Yaris sport, more room than the both of them put together!

David Jenkins - 12/5/07 at 12:12 PM

I can recommend a 1300cc Yaris - not the most thrilling-looking car, but surprisingly nippy, and both easy and cheap to service basic stuff like brakes, etc.

I wouldn't recommend the 1100cc version, but all the bigger ones are good to drive. 1500cc T-sport is very good!

The down-side is that second-hand prices are quite high, as many people like them...

the PT is rubbish don't bother

my dad had a test drive and hated it

DRC INDY 7 - 12/5/07 at 02:14 PM

I work for them on the whole they are not that bad i just would not have one out of warranty which is 3 years or 60000 miles
one of the worst problems with them is the front lower wishbone bushes they last between 4000 to 12000 miles and if it is out of warranty they cost £50 each plus vat per bush and 1hr labour charge per side so you are looking at £310 per pair fitted

speedyxjs - 12/5/07 at 03:20 PM

How about a civic? I had a 2002 one as my first car and it was great. Loads more space than you would think just from looking at the outside.
Also my mum is having my grandads old vx astra estate for our dog.

Erk - 12/5/07 at 03:47 PM

if the pram will fit- sportka. fab to drive, and a 2 year old one will be about 5-6k, haggle and you'll find a brand new one for 9k. my wife has one and its brilliant to drive, and absolutely reliable as well.
