Had the builders in and they have de skimmed the wall and have left my bt phone wires like this..
Loads of the wires are not even connected and i still have a phone and net line!! Should these wires be connected together or doesn't it matter?

Normal house phone only really needs 1 pair!

This site seems pretty good.

You only need two wires to be connected, although which ones they are I don't know. Sorry

See above!!

A phone line consists of 2 wires only and if you're phone and broadband are on the same line it's still only 2 wires. Most installers used/use cable with many more cores than necessary for a domestic set-up.

Just tidy up what's there and pin it down.

As already mentioned only 2 wires are required. Terminals 2 & 5 on the rear of the telephone socket faceplates. (colour coding can vary but as long as 2 & 5 match up on any sockets your cooking on gas )

The orange wire was used in the days of actual 'bells' inside telephones where it needed a supply (and a capacitor in the main socket) to get it to ring. This is not required anymore so should be left disconnected as it can add interference to the line.

A 'pair' will often consist of the base colour with a white plus stripe of the same colour (eg orange & orange/white)

Blue is normally the starting colour and runs like this .... blue, orange, green, brown, slate.

At least that is how it was in GPO (BT) in the 70s. God I feel old
