CVH V Zetec
eddie99 - 21/12/08 at 01:06 AM

Hiya guys,

Bit of advice please here...

Currently have got a 1.8cvh from the sierra, started to clean up but the thoughts of getting a new zetec have come back... Have looked around and have found a new zetec post 95 for 400 quid...

Already have a cvh sump that we could modify (known to be easier than modifying a zetec sump) and the starter motor from the cvh. From reading, the things that are left would be ECU, Lots of people are using megaquirt but seems a bit to expensive (trying to keep costs down) so would it be possible to get a 2nd hand ecu of a car that uses this engine and use that?

What have other people done? and is there anything im missing out on?

Am a newbie on this kinda stuff so all help appreciated

Thanks

Ed

I believe people junk the standard stuff for a few reasons, its large, its got security restrictions and it restricts power so not an easy solution worthe spending time and money on.

If you can weld nothing wrong with putting bike carbs on as a cheaper option, knock up a manifold from tubes and plate, you get near throttle body performance, certainly better than standard.

If cost is a major issue , then build it with the CVH and change it later ?
Dont forget that with a post-95 engine you will need a cat to get through SVA

Check out Paul Toynes site

on a budget

As Dave has pointed out above the ECU you are looking for can be found on some early 90's Ford Escorts and Orions.

It is a stand alone unit and can be found on cvh engined cars that have a carb and coil pack style ignition. Get the whole loom and its a straight swap onto your new zetec.

after aug 95 you will need a cat as said above. This means you will also need to run fuel injection.

No reason why you cant use the standard injection system but it is a bit bulky.

The thing that puts most people of is the wiring and ecu side of it.

If you can get a pre pats ecu they are very easy to wire up. link This may or may not meet the emisions for a latter engine. Post pats is in theory doable but more complicated due to the coded key. Avoid the eec v as it gets really complicated.

get a pre aug 95 engine and you can run carbs cheaper ignition and no cat. Unless they change it for iva that is

I loved the 1.6 cvh but hated the 1.8 cvh

This is only any good if you are running a single carb on the zetec. Again very cheap and easy to do on a pre 95 engine.

last year they started doing this mod to the new mondeo rod stock cars. having spoken to few racers they feel the setup is making the same sort of power as the standard efi.
This means the price of the old 32/36 weber has gone up and the esc ecu is harder to find. Ive wired up several of these and have the wiring diagram if you want it.

Of cost is an issue put the CVH in for SVA and swap afterwards to a Zetec.

I had a CVH in mine to start with and was quite happy with it.

To swap to a Zetec is easy as well.

I now have a 2.0 Blacktop with Megajolt and bike carbs.

Having a good Christmas day has made me to decide on getting a new 1.8 zetec engine and using starter motor of the cvh and modifying the cvh sump etc...

Thanks for all your inputs
