vaux red top
daniel mason - 6/2/09 at 06:33 PM

Hi guys,am wondering if many people on here have a 7 with 2.0 16v vaux red top engine? if so is there any rough performance figures you could give (roughly 200 bhp)and any reliability issues i should be aware of. have only ever driven BEC but am interested in a change! its for fast road use only and possibly 1 track dfay in the summer. thanks.

It should be around this point NS Dev will pop up and tell you about his.

Performance wise its BLOOMING FAST - something like 60 in 4 seconds, so as fast as a bike & you get the ability to cruise and go in reverse.

Issues are it only just fits under stuart taylor / caterham body work but you'll be fine with MK / MAC / MNR as they've got extra height in the chassis and or body work.

Hey I'm building a C20XE Dax Rush. Out of interest how are you going to generate the 200hp, NA or blown?

As Im sure you're aware these generated around 150hp when new. I'm fitting throttle bodies, a big bore exhaust and an aftermarket ECU and I'm hoping for 175hp at the wheels.

Once youve figured out the ballpark BHP youre going to end up with then its time to look at the average mass of your finished car. My Dax should hopefully end up around the 650 - 700kg mark, not superlight, with some creature comforts but not overly so. Your car may be different.

Then head over to www.letstorquebhp.com.

Using my figures:

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 200
Weight without Driver (KG) : 700
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 290.30
0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.17
0 - 100 (Secs) : 10.75
60 - 100 (Secs) : 6.58
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.57
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 108.14
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.47
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 109.44

(The bhp is at the flywheel not at the rear wheels)

This method applys to any car setup.

cd.thomson wont all that differ with different wheel size, gearbox, diff ratio?

Daniel Mason are you fitting it to a car that is allready on the road?

cd.thomson - 6/2/09 at 07:54 PM

You can call me Craig

Yep as with anything the number of variables is huge, even road surface is going to make a large difference.

the www.letstorquebhp.com calculator has a lot of information associated with it that explains that there a various fudge factors in the calculator. They have used it on standard production cars to fine tune it.

I should have included a caveat that this should only be used for a ballpark figure. You can safely assume you wont hit 60 in either 1 second or 15 seconds, itll be somewhere around 4. You wont know precisely until its on the road

Craig,

You'll have to fit plentyof luxuries to make it weigh 700kg!!!

Cheers,
James

Built my first MK with an XE.
Twin Dellorto 45's, 175bhp, 0-60, 4-4.5 sec, loooaaads a torque, transX straight cut close ratio box, LSD........wished i never sold it

The only thing faster is me current MK with
ZX 1400 in it!
Daniel, the difference between the two is the former was relaxed cruiser with power when needed, the latter is more revs, revs, revs and more GRIN factor!
BUT both excellent cars in there own right.
Would like to have both if i could... but me garage and pockets are'nt big enough

skippad - 6/2/09 at 10:29 PM

Oh...and weighed in at 560kgs at SVA.
Lightened it a bit after, so prob about 550kgs

SALAD - 6/2/09 at 10:31 PM

I'm using one.....that one <<< with DCOE's and megajolt.
179BHP on the megajolt map.......need to keep the weight down now and it should be 'interesting'

skippad - 6/2/09 at 10:38 PM

BEST upgrade i made was the TransX straight cut box with long ratio first gear...
up to 60mph in first! all ratios all in right place.
Ditch that Sierra box.

I'm sure NS Dev's with posh throttle bodies and a good mapping session (plus ARP bolts) was a lot closer to 200 than 175.

At the wheels?

Theres a lot of debate over my figures, which i was just using as an illustration! A cossie rush is listed as 600kg, so it seems i was over generous with the mass.

My logic is fairly sound for generating ballpark figures without any direct comparison though!

daniel if you need to know owt about the Vauxhall 2.0 16v XE let me know theres nowt much i haven't done with 1 of those engines i ran a 201bhp Nova 2.0 16v for 18 months (2003) and i loved it and it was reliable for everyday use

oh it Matt who bought your car by the way

oh and if you need a motor let me know as bought a Astra Gsi that i'm breaking for spares, which i hope to rebuild and throw some bike carbs on it with some alpha ignition management

Flywheel. 200bhp isn't that difficult to extract from an otherwise standard 20XE with a decent exhaust manifold and throttle bodies, Check out SBD's conversion.

MikeR - 9/2/09 at 07:35 AM

Yep, flywheel.

cd.thomson - 9/2/09 at 06:49 PM

Well thats quite exciting isnt it , I think hearing from others with built versions of what im building has to be the biggest motivation!
