I have virtually no experience of setting up cooling systems, is this likely to be ok, or is the pipe to near the manifold? The wrapping is heat reflective, fire retardant stuff from CBS.

almost certainly yes, it's too close, especially on number 1 primary. get some copper pipe and a 90degree elbow and run it under the manifold in copper, then up to the header tank.

i have routed mine under the exhaust primaries, but as long as they are lower than the level of the water in the header tank it should be ok

I routed mine around the front of the engine and back up the inlet side, using the inlet manifold studs to hold metal/rubber P clips. Works well and is away from the exhaust manifold.

Because the Volvo tank is pressurised the small expansion pipe needs to plumb into the system somewhere and that's not clear from your pics.
I ran mine forward to the rad and hooked it in there on the grounds that if the expansion pipe comes into effect then the liquid needs cooling.
Also if the liquid needs to expand out of the pressure cap it will run onto the scuttle and possibly onto your feet/legs. I made up a small shute which fits under the bottom of the tank in the cap region and sends any hot liquid down intio the bellhousing area.

Thanks for the advice, now routed the other side of the alternator bracket to keep it away from No1. primary. I'll keep an eye on it, and if I have cooling problems will play around with it.

The small expansion pipe isn't connected to anything at present, but I was going to route it to the small fitting on the (Polo) rad.
