Vauxhall Victor modification, what engine and box???????
NS Dev - 12/5/09 at 09:12 PM

Right, as mentioned elsewhere, one of our early projects at Retropower is a 1973 Vauxhall Victor. Its very original, has had only 2 owners and done 33,000 miles, and has its original bill of sale etc.......................

Now, we are not about to take it to any old shows as it is now!!

The plan is to undertake some fairly major mods, the most important of which is to change to engine and box from the current 2.3 slant four and auto box to something a bit more like it!

We will be sticking with auto (from relevant engine) as it suits the american style of the car,but the question is, what to go for???

This has to include the effect it will have on car value, i.e. yes a full house LS7 would be great, but would be unlikely to recoup build value at sale, and it does have to turn a profit!

smallblock chevy for me! can't beat the sound

dinosaurjuice - 12/5/09 at 09:15 PM

got to be chevy IMO

thunderace - 12/5/09 at 09:24 PM

2l redtop
easy to do and with twin 45s will rip.

dmac - 12/5/09 at 09:29 PM

Should be a Vauxhall engine of a similar age, what about a 3.3l straight 6 from a Viscount/Cresta? I think they actually fitted this in the FE bodyshell.

3.0 Carlton/Senator has got to be good value and in keeping?

[Edited on 12/5/09 by ReMan]

NigeEss - 12/5/09 at 09:45 PM

Straight six Carlton would be my choice. Chevy maybe but the six pot just seems right.

Ketchup - 12/5/09 at 09:48 PM

must be able to pick up a nice 325/525 or other bmw donor quite cheap... auto's a plenty, love the sound of a straight 6

blakep82 - 12/5/09 at 10:00 PM

vauxhall, GM, Chevy, all the same

Benzine - 12/5/09 at 10:05 PM

Vauxhall
Victor
Volvo

^__^

MikeR - 12/5/09 at 10:20 PM

BMW - v8 and auto box shouldn't be hard to find.

In fact look up item 130305100133 on ebay.

liam.mccaffrey - 12/5/09 at 11:52 PM

i think the chevy SB feels right

UncleFista - 13/5/09 at 01:11 AM

How about a BMW/VX straight 6 diesel ?

Dunno what that'd do for the resale value though

speedyxjs - 13/5/09 at 06:15 AM

4.0 Jag V8 but you knew that was coming

That would give a whole 133 bhp (SAE) --- the Vauxhall Ventora was no ball of fire.

britishtrident - 13/5/09 at 06:27 AM

A Honda 50 engine in place of the Vauxhall slant 4 would be an imptovement it was a truly horrible engine in SOHC form.
I never encountered one that didn't have a misfire.

The autobox was a "Turbo Hydramatic" so that will make an GM engine gearbox combination an easy fit.

Rover V8 with the GM autobox should go in quite easily

MikeR - 13/5/09 at 06:31 AM

Perhaps we're approaching this from the wrong angle - what are you doing for the rear axle? Just wondering how much power / torque it will take.

NS Dev - 13/5/09 at 06:37 AM

leaving it standard is the current plan, had a poke about and it looks pretty strong to be honest, its got decent location unlike later stuff like mantas etc and a proper prop with no torque tube.

I may be wrong but the axle looks very similar to the whole setup in an opel commodore?

heh heh lol this one doesn't actually, but then it has only done 33k and has lived the last 10 years on display in a vauxhall main dealer's showroom, so I guess it ought to run right!!

If it is an FE its 100% Comodore, FD was a mixture of Comodore and Viva parts.

NS Dev - 13/5/09 at 06:49 AM

tis an FE. That's both good, and interesting, never knew there was that much collaboration between opel and vauxhall by what must have been the late sixties (at the design stage of the FE)

Good because the std commodore axle is pretty robust!

The FA Victor was nice to drive but it rusted like nothing else on earth, the FB Victor was a sucess a very nice motor but again it rusted, the FC was a failure overweight horrible looking and of course it rusted.

Closely related to the Viva HB the Victor FD was largely GM US influenced body syling was not unlike a smaller version of the 67Impala like wise the suspension followed the pattern GM had used on the 63 Impala. The FD was considered a failure so for the FE GM USA told Vauxhall to use the complete Comodore floor plan but with the Vauxhall SOHC.

The flaws in this logic were that the FD failed because of the dreadful engine and the fact it was just a little too big for the market slot, The FE was of course bigger and heavier and still used the awful engine.
Vauxhall were left without a real contender in the mid range until the excellent Ascona was rebaged as the RWD Cavalier.

omega 24 v6 - 13/5/09 at 11:30 AM

I voted other.
The other being a V6 omega of course or even better a Monaro V8

sickbag - 13/5/09 at 11:35 AM

How about restoring it to its former glory, and keep it totally standard? Or am I missing something.

MikeR - 13/5/09 at 12:23 PM

I've already discussed that with him.....

Like he said, then again I had thoughts about modernising old "classics" with better brakes, engine etc.

Didn't Vauxhall have a 2.3 in the Vectra around the 1997-2002 area?

even the VX4/90 (with 112bhp iirc) was pushing the limits of the chassis, I wouldn't like to drive one with much more power than that.
