and no i wont be swapping it for a zetec/duratec/bike engine etc just yet.
got on the road on tuesday and have so far done 300 miles in it, only problem is the engine just isn't quite right.
its a fully reconned 2lt pinto, totally standard, running bike carbs with 160 ish jets and megajolt.
at low revs it has buckets loads of torque, but above 3500rpm it starts to wain, and theres no point goin to 4500rpm, cos by then it does nothing but
make lots of noise. the other thing that may help diagnosis is that it sounds sweet as a nut, but when off the throttle but in gear it pops and bangs
like mad, like loads!!
anywho, here are my options:
1) drive it as is, then when it starts gettin cold and dark outside do a proper job (see further down)
2) tweek with the jets, and megajolt map (not sure what its on at the mo) as that could be the short term answer
3) take it off the road again now and put on the other head i have bought with an fr33 cam, cut a hole in the bonnet, fit the pipercross filter and
get it on the rolling road for proper power. how much time will this take up?
cheers,
Martin

Right then... Blogg Brothers to get the best out of the carbs. Your description sounds like the needle position and main jet are wrong. It needs
jetting correctly. Dave at BB is the guy for you. Its worth the drive over, believe me!
Thats all I can think of apart from saving up and change it for a duratec engine.
Or, have a look in the Sept ClassicFord mag where they are building a 2.1 pinto. BUT, beware a duratec change will be cheaper..

Zetec or Duratec, simples
Just need a few more questions answering if I may, what bike are the carbs off? Have you checked that the carbs are balanced and /or have no inlet
leaks, what is the megajolt using map or tps, I have a map that works well on my pinto with cb600 bike carbs and a fast road cam. Drop me an email if
you want a copy of it.
Just a thought there is a default pinto map kicking around that has the rev limiter set really low, maybe this is all it is, whack it upto 5700 ish
and see what its like.
Cheers

Short term - sort out the fuelling and the map. It sounds like it just needs setting up above 3500 - it should pull for a lot longer than that....
I would set it up as it is now, then change the cam, etc., after....

I would go with option 3. No point spending time setting it up to then make further changes to the engine, swap the head over and take it to AB.
Gsxr 600 carbs. Carbs very nicely balanced. Using tps
Just going to empty my head on what I'd check...
As you describe "but when off the throttle but in gear it pops and bangs like mad, like loads!!" I'd go for incorrect timing as the
most probably cause, so...
Have you checked the timing to ensure that it advances correctly.
Is the sensor on the crank toothed wheel set very close on a sturdy bracket?
The crank sensor going back to the edis/megajolt using sheilded cable only grounding one end of the sheild?
Check all the megajolt setting and load a basic 2d map first, in fact I've kept my 2d map as it works great. Check that rev limit setting!
Are you using a bike fuel pump? Have heard of a lot of people struggling to use car fuel pumps and regulators with bike carbs. If you are using a
bike pump is it in the correct position near the tank as they work better pushing fuel although mine is in the bay and have no problems so far.
Is your tank pressurising?
Just a few things to check over.

how about enjoying the car for the rest of the summer and then you can mod the crap out of it in the winter!
Put bloooming howge wheels on the bugger and drive it
Enjoy a pinto not going over 3500 RPM? Not likely

I'm not happy if mine aint doing 6K!!

It doesn't sound like it needs months spending on it just yet, why not take it to a GOOD rolling road session (heard v good stuff about bogg bros
too)
In my mind, you could try all sorts yourself, waste time and money, but if you haven't the experience, then you havn't the experience.
£100 spent on a rolling road and the worst that could happen is you leave with a definative answer of what is wrong and (if using bogg bros) a price
to sort it. The best - a fully sorted motor pulling like it should.
seems a no brainer to me...
Yeh, I'd third Boggs too
Great place and they know there onions

There's a well known problem that occurs with Megajolt (well, the EDIS bit anyway) - if the VR sensor mount isn't 100% rigid it tends to
vibrate and send false signals.
This tends to happen around 4000 rpm, so it fits in with your description.
