Last check - oil for LSD and type 9
givemethebighammer - 27/3/04 at 02:49 PM

Following everyones advice I have purchased oil for my XR4 x 4 LSD and my type 9 gearbox.

I have

for the diff:

Castrol Differential EPX 80W-90
SAE 80W-90, API, GL5

and for the gearbox:

Castrol Manual EP80W
SAE 80W, API, GL4, MIL-L-2105, MB235.1, ZF TE-ML02

Before I fill the two up has anyone got any objections to the above products as due to lack of drain plugs, it it far harder to remove the oil than put it in !!!!

thanks

I thought i read somewhere that the best thing for transmission oil is actually inexpensive *automatic* tranny oil.

acording to mr haynes, its ep80 for the box,90 for the diff, better check the diff oil when you buy the stuff tho as slippers normally have a different oil.

The Sierra LSD has a sealed viscous coupling. the differetial oil does not get in there. Normal diff oil is what is needed. A hypoid 90 oil is what haynes suggest.

You've got the GL4/GL5 bit the right way round anyway.

As I'm sure you've read too, if you put GL5 in the type 9, it doesn't do the syncros any good.
