MX5 Engine dimensions
brianthemagical - 23/9/09 at 11:25 AM

HI peeps. I need a bit of help.
My new plan involves an MX5 engine and 'box. The problem being i don't know if it'll fit.
So, has anyone per chance got any dimensions, have access to an engine they can measure or know where abouts i can find them on t'internet?

The main things i'm after are the length of the engine, with and wothout the front pulley, any sump dimensins, width of the block and total/max witdth including the anncils, and then the box dimesions, so overall length and width and the distance from stick to front of box.

Thanks for any help.

I can help you with the box when i get home.
Not sure about the engine though.

Is it for the 1.6 or the 1.8 as they are different in length

brianthemagical - 23/9/09 at 11:38 AM

That'd be cracking thanks. I'm in no rush or owt.

As for the engine size, i'm still undecided. If both'll fit then probably the 1.8.

I should also point out you were correct in the assumption i'm not after the 2.0, or any later NC engines, just the NA or NB.

Thanks.

I have a 1.6 MX5 engine in my car with 5 speed g'box and also a spare 1.6 engine in the garage.

However I won't be anywhere near home until Saturday, if you're still keen send me an email with the dimensions you want and I'll have a look on Saturday.

I had decided to go for a 1.8. Bad thing is that aftermarket bolt on performance parts are mostly for the 1.6.

I have a 1.6 1990 - What measurements do you need?

Please post the dimensions in the forum for future refference for other members as well.

Thanks again peeps, this forum is mint.

jAG; Thanks for the offer, i'll keep you i mind if i still need them on Sat.

l0rd; Not too interested in mods tbh, maybe ITB's on a custom mani, and it'll have MS, so not too fussed about the avalibility of parts. Thanks for the heads up. I thik the deciding factor will be which comes along at the right price.

McLannahan; U2U, thanks.

thaks again for all the help peeps.

Part of my plan is to draw up a CAD model of the eninge, i figured it'd be the best way to see if it fitted i the chassis, so if anyone can help with maybe a photo with so reference dimensions that's be a great help. IT'll be a failry simple boxey thing to start with, but as i get chance i'll progress it and then make the drawings avalible to you lovely lot.

Thanks again.

Dave1888 has just replaced the engine in his Tiger with an MX5 engine and gearbox.

He's got a blog here http://www.tigermx5.blogspot.com/

It's also on my possible list of winter modifications!

Cheers

Mike

Nope.

But they are naturally aspirated versions of the old Mazda 323 turbo engines, hence why they respond well to forced induction.

(Can you tell I've been doing my research!? Now if I can just figure out how to coat an MX5 in invisible paint so SWIMBO can't see it while I break it!)

These are rough dimensions. If you need more information, i can unpack it and measure it up again.

Thanks for the help peeps.

L0rd, that's perfect. I'll get a quick 3D drawn up and then probably hassle you for some more dimensions. Thanks.

I'm still after engine dimensions if any one can help with them. Thanks.
