Just want to say a big...
speedyxjs - 14/10/09 at 10:50 AM

...whoops

I wanted to get the car up to temperature to make sure thermostat works, no leaks in rad, fan works etc. We got it up to 94 degrees, fan just kicked in, all was good until i heard a ping and my grandad was shouting for me to stop.

This is why

I remembered i needed to put some juilee clips on last night but forgot this morning. It is a really tight fit and took me ages to get it on. Will jubilee clips be enough?

blakep82 - 14/10/09 at 10:53 AM

oops

is that water? jubilee clips are good for the rest of the water system, so should be fine

speedyxjs - 14/10/09 at 10:54 AM

Nope. Its the pipe i put in place of the oil cooler

Big whoops

scootz - 14/10/09 at 10:58 AM

Phew... thank god for granddads!

speedyxjs - 14/10/09 at 10:59 AM

I wanted him there so he could keep an eye on everything while i watched the temperature.

blakep82 - 14/10/09 at 11:02 AM

ah, oil... grandads rock
jubilee clips should be fine for oil. not sure what pressure its under.

nick205 - 14/10/09 at 11:03 AM

Nice mess

Make sure you strain it well before you put it back in

What would you suggest?

Get in touch with Think Auto. I got a set of oil hoses from them for about £45.

Jubilee clips won't hold high pressure oil in.

I used worm-drive clips as a temporary measure four years ago and they're still there!

turbodisplay - 14/10/09 at 11:31 AM

I would say standard clips are fine.
I used the fir tree connections that do not require clips and they hold fine on 5/8" hose. (clips acually damage the hose - don`t ask how I know that!
5 bar pressure is 5 x 14.7 = 73.5 psi.
half inch squared is 0.25.
Total push to seperate 0.5" oil hose is 18 lb or 8kg.

I guess you o your grandad a drink.

blakep82 - 14/10/09 at 11:52 AM

have your hose joiners got a lip round the ends?

Yep. Thats why they were so hard to fit.

blakep82 - 14/10/09 at 12:13 PM

^ cool, just wondered, coz if they weren't, and you used hose clips, it might not have made much difference. but if they've got a lip round then it should hold a lot better (as i'm sure you know)

Alternative is to go to a place that makes hydraulic hoses (taking the old hose with you) there seem to be plenty of palces in small industrial units making hydraulic hoses. I doubt it would cost much to get a proper hose set made up, and no doubt they would be interested in the car, and probably do a deal for cash..

Problem is, they are fixed to the oil filter housing so i cant undo them.

Canada EH! - 14/10/09 at 02:04 PM

Is that U shaped union the problem spot? If so it is rather restrictive.
Being as you now need to change the oil, remove the filter and the oil filter sandwich that has the cooler hoses and take the lot to a hydralic hose dealer. He has the equipment to make a proper one piece hose that will hold at hundreds of PSI.

flak monkey - 14/10/09 at 02:13 PM

The best things are crimped clips for high pressure systems. You can crimp them with a pair of pincers

That said 5 bar isnt much and jubilee clips should hold it no problem as long as the fitting is a tight in the hose in the first place. We have loads of machines running 5 bar coolant pressures and they all use jubilee clips on a lot of the system.

The other option is proper crimped hydraulic hoses, but you'll pay the price.

I thought of a great solution last night.

Il make a bracket to mount the metal part onto the chassis. This will stop it being able to move and then put some jubilee clips on to be sure.

Markymark - 15/10/09 at 12:59 PM

Or buy the oil cooler bypass, as mentioned in my previous post.
If you can find an x300 engine in the scrappy you should get it dirt cheap. Save you another Exxon Valdez!

Bluemoon - 15/10/09 at 01:09 PM

Hang on, if you have a sandwich plate, can't you remove this and mount the filter directly??
