
I sent my sump for powder coating and the guy at the shop told me they apply paint outside and inside the sump. At first I don't like the idea of
painting inside the sump, but then I see lot of cars have their sumps painted inside and outside, also some gearboxes...
What do you think?
i would have thought the powder coat would get inside too.
my diff cover is powder coated in and out, so i wouldn't worry too much
Dont do it.
They can mask the inside. It takes time and that costs a bit extra, but better imho.
doesn't sound right - but I can't think of a good reason why 
wouldnt like to think that paint was coming loose in the sump, particles equal filter blockage abrasion etc.
I would only have the outer done if anything. I would rather paint it, having seen what powder coating is like when it get the slightest damage
I got mine done and he blasted it then masked the inside before coating - all without me even having to ask
I've got his number if anyone up in this part of the world needs stuff done....

ah, blocked oil galleys, jets and stuff, noooo, they're right, don't do it!
Powder coat might not be petrol/oil proof.. Silly thing is our Fiesta has the inside of the rocker cover painted (as ford intended).. Took the rocker
off at about 50K to find the paint peeling inside! Not good no damage seems to be done though.. So I scraped off the paint from the inside (it's
not going to rust in there with all that oil after all)..

Used to work at a company with Powdercoating facilities and there's no need for them to coat the inside of the sump
DON'T Let them do this, there is a danger that it will peel off in bits, especially if the surface hasn't been prepared properly
Heard a story of an XE that went bang because the cam cover had been coated on the Inside and it had started to peel off blocking the oilway's

Hi,
A couple of months ago i had an old TVR in to complete a wiring loom and get the vehicle running properly, after the owner had rebuild the engine and
restored the chassis. After about a week of starting first time in the morning it suddenly had no oil pressure. After dipping the oil it appeared grey
and horrid, so i decided i should drain it and change it. I undid the sump plug and nothing happened. Poking inside the drain hole it apeared there
was something blocking the hole, after clearing it a grey sludge came out.
At this point i knew the sump would have to come down so i could inspect it, this revealed that the owner had had the sump powder coated inside and
out. Not only had the powder coat come away from the inside and blocked the pick-up, but the sump had not been properly cleaned after it was blasted.
The blasting powder had been left behind all the bafles and had traveled up through the oil system destoying the oil pump and bearings. The engine had
to be stripped, cleaned and re-assembled with new bearings, pump etc.

I agree 100% with you.
I only ask because I find out and lots of cars have the sump painted inside from the factory. I checked 4 different sumps from different car makers
which are painted inside!!
my new tin sump for the focus was/is painted on the inside
I've no idea what paint they use, but its definatly not powdercoat......
