Ok, i changed the cam belt and tensioners/pulleys and tried the engine with alternator/water pump removed. Still getting quite a loud whirring noise.
Is it something to do with the bike carbs? Still sounds like a bearing...? Increases/decreases with engine rpm's
Any ideas anyone? (1.8 zetec zx6r carbs megajolt)
Dan
have you taken the cam belt covers off to see if its rubbing on the pulleys.
adam
Which Zetec? early blackies have a second idler down by the crank pulley???
Silver top. Not checked to see if it's rubbing there.... how would it rub? You mean the cam pulleys on the cam cover? or the belt?
Dan
are you absolutely sure it is coming from the front of the engine. Could it be the clutch release bearing you are hearing?
The timing belt can makes a whining/whiring noise if it's been over-tensioned.
Invisible Ghost powered supercharger?
Sounds like the clutch release bearing. Have you noticed if the noise disapears when you depress the clutch? I have the same problem with my blacktop,
it's just a case of creating some freeplay, or i cured mine with a piece of rubber hose around the clutch cable ,between the bottom of the pedal
around the inner cable and the bulkhead. I did this because the clutch pedal used to fall forwards towards you as you were driving. Hope this helps.
cheers Eric.

With the engine running and with care not to catch reciprocating parts put a long metal object (big screwdriver or small crowbar work well) on
different parts of the engine cupping your ear to the other end. This should help you narrow down where it's coming from.
HTH.

Have you checked Alt?
Most likely Alt Bearings.
Beware as if they are, you´re very close to Alt failure. Screwdriver test should point out if so

I am testing this without the alternator fitted... to eliminate that and the water pump. I have no clutch cable fitted yet.
Reading what you've all put it may be the cam belt too tight. I'll have a look this morning and check back.... Any other suggestions
welcome
Thanks
