Engine starting problem
Arnie - 23/7/11 at 01:36 PM

Looking for help. Currently have an MK Indy running a 2ltr pinto engine. Normally on a megajolt with bike carbs.

The problem is I cannot get it to start properly using either the megajolt or original ignition system. When I turn it over on the starter motor it makes no attempt to start just turns over. However occasionally when I release the key the engine will start and run okay. Once running the engine operates normally. I noticed when I was trying to see what the problem was that I did not get a spark until I released the key.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what the problem might be. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Regards,

Arnie.

Is the choke mechanism connected up on the carbs? Full 12v when cranking??

Sounds like when the starter motor is running there's not enough power left for the spark, does the battery voltage hold up ok.

Is the ECU wired up so that it is still powered while cranking ?

Ditto. Make sure the MJ is not connected to the ACC output on the key switch.

do you still have it wired for a ballast resistor ? symptons sound like similar to when the ballast would go open circuit. try a permmanent + to the coil and see what happens

Eventually traced fault to loss of +12ve supply to Megajolt when turning key to Starter position. Faulty Ignition switch. However what complicated the issue was that the earth wire to the Megajolt was broken inside the insulation at the battery terminal. Only noticed when I took it off to charge battery. I must have damaged at some point during original fault location.

Once again thanks for all your help.

Now to enjoy what is left of the summer.
