Yesterday on the way to work early my ford 4 speed gearbox started rattling.

After I noticed a loud hissing noise it then took about three minutes to go to rattling like a handful of nuts and bolts shaken in a biscuit tin.

Odd thing is in third gear it makes no noise at all, transmits power smoothly and drives just fine (so I got home in third) but there's this huge rattle noise in neutral, first, second and fourth.

I haven't taken it out yet, but what do you think broke? Any suggestions?

Rough guess, lays haft bearings or third gear synchro.
When loaded in 3rd all ok when unloaded rattles.
Just a very rough guess
