Zetec engine height?
ChrisLeary - 15/7/12 at 05:57 PM

Evening all,

Just a quick question, I've fitted my engine and gearbox today, but it appears to be sitting very very high.

Is there any chance a couple of people that have a zetec silvertop fitted in a 7, could possibly measure between the top chassis rail and the top of the cam cover please? And also how far the sump sits below the bottom chassis rail?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

All depends on chassis height and all sorts of things..

Atleast if I have a measurement I'll have something to work from...

Has the sump been shortened? I cut mine down level with the bottom of the bell housing and fitted it with the base of the sump about 30mm below the chassis rails. My engine is quite far forward and I had to cut the back of the nose cone to clear the cam cover , the nose cone is a short one at only about 8 inches above the chassis rail and the cam cover is about 15mm above it.

Another factor could be the height of your chasis I note you have a locost, I may be wrong but early Locosts I beieve had a one inch lower chasis. Many manafacurers increased the rail Height to overcom this. My sump has been shortened and sits about 3" from the floor the nose cone just clears the cam cover.

Hope this helps, Mine is a silvertop fitted into an MK chasis

If you sit the engine further back in the chassis you gain extra height due to the rake of the bonnet. You also place the gear lever in a better position without the need for an extension. As said the sump should be level with the bell housing after chopping. I raised the nose cone by adding a 1 inch spacer to the sides on a standard caterham front.

just measured my blacktop in the striker-

19cm from top of rocker cover (not cam cover) to top of upper chassis rail.
10cm from the bottom of the lower rail to the bottom of the 2 stage sump.
Its also 10cm from the BOTTOM of the rail to the underside of the block.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll get down the garage at some point and compare some of your measurements to see if i can lower it a bit.

Thanks all,
Chris.
