Hi guys,
I have a striker with an escort rear axle with prop going into a 5spd type 9.
Getting a fair bit of vibration driving and struggles to stay in gear.
I noticed that where the prop goes into the gearbox there is around 1mm play in all directions.
I'm assuming that I shouldn't have this play?
Any ideas what would normally cause this and what I need to take apart next?
Cheers
Andy
If there's that much play I'm surprised there's no oil coming out; Even if not running out maybe just enough to be wet... There is oil in the 'box, isn't there?
Thats alot of vibration if its shaking it out of gear
Is it at any speed,on and off throttle , every gear etc
Have you checked prop ujs for play or seizure
Mainly at high speed on throttle is the worst.
Erm haven't actually checked the gearbox oil tbh.
No play anywhere else apart from where the prop meets the gearbox.
How much of the UJ is inside the gearbox? Unless that UJ has a very long splined section it doesn't look like enough to me, which will cause vibration and could ultimately cause failure.

Hmm, was just thinking the same having looked again.
The shaft should be another 2" in at least, you can see the mark left on the right hand side from where the box seal ran (when fitted to donor
car)
The engine and box needs moving back.
Bloody hell. I'm surprised it's not just fallen out at speed. There can't be much shaft inside that gearbox.
Would it be prudent to check the diff mounting, just in case that is the cause of the displaced prop? I wonder if there is a possibility of bent mounting rails or similar.
