Type 9 source!

I have bought a remanufactured type 9 from a guy in Wales. He was a bit vague where he bought it but said that he bought it from a kit car builder in or around the Swindon area who builds using 2.0 Zetecs and Type 9's. I am trying to find out the source so that I can find out what spec the box is i.e ratios and bearings without having to remove the cover. Plan to fit it to an ST170 engine so will need heavy duty bearings etc. Anyone any ideas?

I'm guessing but could you not work out the ratios by turning the input that (while in each gear) and counting the turns of the output shaft?

Yes I see what you mean! Trouble is I still won't know if I am going to kill the box in the first thrash down the road. When I get a quick shift or something I'll start counting!

Whats wrong with removing the gearbox cover?

Whalst your checking what its got in it, you can check for and damaged or worn parts. You could even change the gearbox oil whalst your at it.

and if you take the bellhousing off you will know if it is a heavy duty type 9 or not, the heavy duty 'box has a boss on the outside of the front of the casing, to house larger layshaft bearings, the std type 9 just has the layshaft flush with the front of the casing.

I am being a bit lazy and to be honest the ratios are not a problem but not sure how I can identify if it has heavy duty bearings. The gearbox is un-used since being rebuilt / remanufactured and it hasn't yet got oil in it. I was hoping to find out where it came so that I can call them.

Not quite I'm afraid! Can you takle the pic at a bit of an angle to one side of the front of the 'box? The boss I am on about is under the input shaft on your pic!

If there is a boss there, it's heavy duty. If there is just a 3/4" shaft flush with the end of the casing, it's not.

Looks like a visit to BGH for me then! There is no protruding boss under the input shaft.

Wont the standard type 9 take the power and torque from the ST170? I was under the impression they could take more than that.

Looking at some of the threads running in the past I think the max bhp for a standard box is about 145 - 150. I was told also that with a 3.62 lsd first gear on a standard ratio box is a bit short. Any further advice will be gratefully received.

what type 9 was fitted to the V6 granadas?

the box was used on V6 granadas coped with 150hp ....


are not all type 9 ratios basically the same, with the final drive being decided by the diff?

they are similar but as NS Dev said the heavy duty box as fitted to the v6 can handle more power, it also has slightly different ratio's with a marginally better first gear (.3 different) the downside is the longer input shaft which needs a spacer on the bellhousing to fit the standard clutch. You can get round it but the spacer is the easiest / best option (cutting the splines down an inch with an angle grinder just doesn't seen right somehow)

It all depends on the weight of the car it's in and the way it's driven. I broke 3 std type 9's in quick succession behind a 200hp vauxhall XE in a rally car, but then I know of somebody using a std box in a very light westy behind basically the same engine who has no problem over a year's worth of track days!

I would say it will be very marginal, and to do it right, speak to Brian Hill Geartech, best to get it right I think.
