Hi all

Can some of you cleverer chaps than me out there give me some advise

I have a 1.6 16 valve Vauxhall engine fitted running feul injection and i want to convert to carbs as this engine although goes very well indeed is very restricted in the inlet department.

I am heading down the motorcycle Yamaha R1 carb route

BUT!!
Once i remove the injection etc how do i run the ignition side?
I have been told that it is possible to keep the original ecu and loom and pic out the bits i need to run the ignition

Or do i need a programable ecu if so which one?

Any ideas on the subject would be great

Why not keep with injection. Use bike throttle bodies and a Megasquirt setup? No problems with clearance under the bonnet, the sensors will already be in place and you have fully programmable engine management.

It's a budget/DIY programmable ECU. You can buy them ready made if you don't feel too confident with a soldering iron.

The back to basics alternative is to use a early Cavalier dizzy/amp module/coil with a drive from the front crankshaft pulley. I'm sure stu or ned will enlighten me here but i'm sure you can't mount it at the rear like on the 2.0l as the housing/cam cover/head is different on the 1.6l

The mk1/ mk2 escort boys mount it on the front as bulkhead clearance in the engine bay is thier problem.

Im using the R1 carbs on a zetec Im going to use the megajolt diy ecu to run the ignition.

Its an ecu that controles the Ford edis lost spark ignition setup..

You dont need to be good with a soldering iron,infact you dont even need to own a soldering iron if you buy one ready made.

Depends what sort of power your after, and how much your prepared to spend.

These engines were seriously restricted from the factory by the inlet manifold. Replacing this does give around 20bhp with standard everything else. Their are replacement inlet manifolds on the market for about £500, but fabricating your own wouldn't be too hard, as basically just needs to be a rectangular box with a flange for the throttle body at one end, and a flange for the 4 oval lower inlet manifold ports on the bottom.

I can give you more info on this, or other tuning for this engine if you require. I built a throttle bodied one for my old Nova which had around 180bhp with throttle bodies and DTA management.

I dont think fitting a dizzy would be easy! The standard management would throw a fit if you removed the injection side, and tried to just use the ignition side of it.

Will concur exactly with the post above.

My mates old mid engined Nova used the same setup and made exactly the same power.
